Barley harvesting has al ready been completed and oat har vesting is well underway. Earl Weisner of the Barksdale commun ity reports that he weighed 79 bush els of Moregrain from one acre last week. Moregrain looks good. It’s a short stem oat with a good head. Now Is the time to select next year’s seed, store them properly, and plan to clean and treat them before planting this fall. We have just received Circular 435, “Insect Con trol in Stored Grain.’* You may have a copy by calling this office. Drowning in farm ponds is not an unusual occurrence in Laurens County. Farm pond owners should either provide safety equipment at the pond or make sure that those swimming have their own. Farm ponds certainly provide a source of recreation, but they are also very hazardous unless safety measures are taken. What source of nitrogen is best to side-dress cotton? The truth is all sources are good. I wouldn’t doubt if each couldn’t be proven superior to the other under certain condit ions. Farmers should base their judgment on soil test, and normal- This same idea should be followed in side-dressing all crops. Cotton farmers should make ev ery effort to dust or spray cotton when first squares are forming. Probably three applications should be applied at week intervals. This will set the first squares. Thereafter the cotton should be checked regu larly for insect damage. Farm and Home Week has been set for August 15 through the 19. Plan now to attend and spend a week at Clem son. Poison oek may be killed with Ammate. Just follow directions. Cedar rust is attacking apple trees in the county. 'Hiis diease is carried by cedar trees and is very hard to control. W. R.
