Conservation Districts in this state will build at least 1.000 dams for ponds during 1958 These dams will impound water for irrigation, live stock, fish and recreation. The Soil Conservation Service will furnish technical assistance for the design, layout, and checking of these dams ACP will share the cost of most of them With a few excep tions, all will be constructed by pri vate' contractors - - Great care is taken in the selec tion and investigation of each dam site The dam is designed for max imum safety and economy All of this, however, may be rendered completely ineffective by poor con struction A few fundamental prin ciples which apply to the construc tion \'Of an earth dam, large or small, are: (1) Get technical assistance in the selection of the site for the dam. (2) Clear site for dam of all trees, brush, stumps, roots, etc (3) Excavate cutoff or core trench at lest 12 inches deep into an impervous or tight soil (4) Use a sandy clay soil for back-filling cutoff trench and for building the dam. The best mix ture is 20 to 30 per cent clay and 70 to 80 per cent sand Get techni cal assistance to locate this kind of soil. (5) Soil used for fill should be “clean’’ soil. In other words, free of mots, stumps, Jogs, and large . | (6) Dam should be built up in layers rn^t exceeding 10 inches in thickness, and each layer compact ed (7) Soil should not be too wet or too dry Dry soil or wet soil won’t pack Moisture is about right when soil is just too wet for good plowing but not wet enough to show water w hen squeezed (81 Finish off the dam and spill way as surveyed, and vegetate spillway and exposed areas of dam' These simple fundamental prin ciples may make the difference be tween a successful project and a partly filled r totally dry pond Following them can save farmers money and prevent disapmntment.
