Mother's Refusal Ot Blood Transfusion Said Cause Of Death Laurens—A young Laurens mo ther who had just given birth to twins in the Laurens hospital died early Tuesday from complications arising from loss of blood and the mother’s steadfast refusal to accept a blood transfusion due to her re ligious faith, doctors said. The 20-year-oW woman, Ttfrs. Bar bara Ann Dailey Rhodes, finally was given blood after she lapsed into unconsciousness and her hus band, James Rhodes, had given the doctors a signed statement author izing the transfusion However, oth er complications had set in due to ’he long period of insufficient blood ^supply and doctors who fought grimly for the patient’s life were unable to save her, they said. Mrs. Rhodes, a secretary in the office of Marshall Abercrombie and T. David Sloan, local atorneys, was a member of Jehovah Witneses, a religious sect which prohibits blood tranfusions for its members. Mr. Abercrombie, in a statement Tuesday night, said “the situation to me was tragic and an inexcusable waste of human life.” Mr. Abercrombie said he receiv ed a call at 6:30 a. m. Monday say ing Mrs. Rhodes was critically ill in the hospital following birth of twin daughters. He said that when he arrived at the hospital a few minutes later he was told by the attending physic cian that the woman’s condition was critical because the patient herself had requested that no blood transfusion be given her. He said that the girl’s mother, Mrs. Sam Dailey, and an aunt, Mrs. Truman Gaines, both said to be members of Jehovah’s Witnesses, joined in the request that no blood be given. DILLARD “Quality Goods Since 1907” 1 After Mrs. Rhodes lapsed into un consciousness, Mr. Rhodes signed the statement authorizing the trans fusion and eight pints of blood were given the patient. “When I got to the hospital, Mrs. Rhodes had been needing blood for approximately 12 hours,” Mr. Ab ercrombie stated. Mr. Abercrombie said that Cur tis Walker of Williamston, an uncle of the patient, and who is not a Je- hovas Witness, asked attending phy sicians for permission to call in a Greenville doctor. The consulting physirian from. GreenvUe found the condition of the patient “poor” when he arrived at the Laurel pital. After examining the patient, he told Mr. Walker that “every thing had been done that could have been done since Mrs. Rhodes had gone so long without blood and there was but slim chance tha she could recover,.” Husband Gives Consent Mr. Abercrombie praised the at- ns .doctor lAtipnt ernai Political Announcements FOR ALDERMAN Ward Six I hereby announce myself a can didate for reelection as Alderman from Ward Six and pledge to abide by the rules of the Democratic pri mary JAMES C. THOMASON % titude of the patienf’s husband who, the lawyer said, “was not a Jeho vah Witness by choice.” He said that Mr Rhodes joined the Witness es only after the girl had refused to marry him unless he did so. Mr Abercrombie said that when doctors told Mr. Rhodes that his wife needed blood, “he could not readily agree to it because Barbara Ann was still at that time conscious and able to talk. She still at that time refused blood transfusions and continued to refuse as long as she was conscious. He had ‘ promised Barbara Ann he would not let the doctors give blood transfusions aft- ernarbara Ann lost consciousness. The other members of Jehovah’s Witnesses, including Barbara Ann”s mother and Mr. and Mrs. TrSman Gaines and others reminded him constantly that he could not forget the promise he had made to Bar bara Ann and if he did authorize blood transfusions. Barbara Ann would not forgive him nor live with him in the future ” A native of Anderson County, Mrs. Rhodes was the daughter of Mr and Mrs. Sam A. Dailey, of Laurens.
