Registration Board To Cut Court House Pates Lack of Interest Is Given As Cause Market Forces Cut In Joanna Production The Laurens County legislative delegation has been forced to curtail the sittings of the Board of Regis tration, it was announced this week. Reason for the move was given as lack of interest on the part of res idents of the county in securing reg istration certificates. The board has been meeting for continuous daily sessions in the court house in Laurens for some time, and in addition other mem bers of the board have been going to other points in the county to register vdlers. However, it was stated, on some days as few as 15 citizens ap peared to apply for certificate*. “In view of the lack of interest on the part of voters, and for the sake of economy—lor it is expensive to keep the board in session six full days a week—we find it necessary to reduce the schedule,” members of the delegation stated. The board will continue in session at the court hoifse through the re mainder of this week (March 29). But there will be no registration next week (March 31-Apnl 5). Returning to the court house on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, April 7, 8, 9. sessions of the board will cease until April 28, when a two-week session will be held April 28 to May 10. By law, no registration can be permitted 30 days prior to an elec tion (State and county Democratic primaries take place on June 10.) It was pointed out that in the case of Clinton voters, they must secure their registration certificates no or before April 27 in order to vote in the city Democratic primary on May 27. A division of the Registration Board was in session in Cunt on Monday and Tuesday, and two re turn dates have been set for ap pearances in this area. It is pre sumed these dates will be kept, re gardless of the curtailed schedule. Hugh B Workman, re ports that most farmers who wanted to take part in the 1958 cotton acre age reserve of the soil bank, but could not file signed agreements be cause of fund limitations, will ap parently be able to sign up at the county office in the near future. Both the Senate and the House of Representatives have approved a supplemental appropriation of 250 million dollars to provide for addi tional acreage reserve participation. This will bring the total to 750 mil lion dollars for the 1958 program. Because agreement on some de tailed program provisions must still be reached in House-Senate confer ence, congressional action on the supplemental appropriation is not yet complete. As soon as final ac tion is taken, the county committee will get the “go ahead” for com pleting the signup. Preliminary steps have been taken by the state ASC committee to prepare the way for immediate action when the sup plemental funds are authorized. In addition to farmers who have already filed signed agreements, which were in general covered by the initial appropriation for the acre age reserve, other eligible farmers will be in position to take part in the enlarged program. These will in clude those whose names are on “waiting list" registers at the coun ty office, and possibly others where there is evidence that they made an attempt to participate during the signup period.
