Sends Two To Training Union Meet Jennie Rae Surratt of Joanna, in the junior sword drill, and Libby Boland of West End Church in New berry, in the speakers tournament, were representatives of the Reedy River Baptist Associotion at the Training Union Western Regional convention on Tuesday. The meeting was held with the First Baptist Church of Edgefield, and included representatives from Laurens, Reedy River, Ridge, Abbe ville, and Edgefield associations. 'Pie two Reedy River representa tives were selected at eliminations held at the Joanna church on March 18. To Speak This Evening NEPHEW WINS SCHOLARSHIP Richard Archibald Ray, a senior at Dartmouth College, Hanover, N. H., has beeri awarded the Rocke feller Foundation Fellowship for 1958-59. The son of Dr. and Mrs. Archie C. Ray of Decatur, Ga., he is a nephew of Mrs. W. R. Anderson, Jr., of this city. Larry Landrith Named Honor Man Of Company Larry Remain Landrith, airman, has been chosen honor man of his navy recruit company, one of 12 companies graduated this week at the U. S. Naval Training Center, at San Diego, Calif. Landrith is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Landrith of Clinton. Honor men are chosen on the ba sis of leadership, sportsmanship, military bearing, initiative, re sponse to orders, qualifications of a good shipmate, and application to recruit training. Selection is made by a vote of the comany. Landrith expects to be assigned to machinist mate school in Norman, Okla., upon his return from 14 days recruit leave. Bell St. Farmers And Homemakers Have Annual Banquet The annual New Farmers and Homemakers banquet of Bdl St. High School was held Friday eve ning in the school cafeteria Presiding over the program were NHA and NFA presidents. The welcome address was given by Willie James Young, and re sponse by Mrs. Mattie W Hudson. The NFA gave a musical selection, “The Happy Whistling Song.” The history of NHA was given by Jean Floyd, and the NFA activities and accomplishments for the school year were reviewed by Arthur Wes ley. Introduction of the speaker for the banquet was by Marilyn Taylor, who introduced Miss Mattie E. Ge- gues, teacher-trainer of Home Eco nomics Education, NHA executive secretary of South Carolina State College, Orangeburg. Miss Pegues spoke to the assembly on the rela- tinoship between the two organiza tions and a “swarm of bees ” She urged the members to be no ble, to want to do, to want to gi^e and share. “Behave yourselves in everyday life, be loyal, be kind, be graceful, be aware of carelessness, be the light of service, be strong in spirit, be merciful, be pure in heart, and, above all. be a peace maker.” After the address the NHA’s sang their chapter song Remarks were made by Princpial McQuilla Hudson and Advisor F. W Gist, and Mrs. C. G. Pruitt. Recog nition of visitors by Josephine Kin- ard was followed by the regular closing ceremony of the NFA and NHA The host chapters along with their guests enjoyed a social hour in the school’s gymnasium AT HOME Friends of Terry Copeland, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. L. L. Copeland, Jr., will be interested to know she is at home following an operation ill ness at the General Hospital in Greenville. She will receive weekly check-ups at the hospital and will return in about four weeks for a minor operation. RELEASED FROM SERVICE Friends of Marvin Stewart, Jr, will be interested to know he has re cently been released from military srvice and has resumed his position at the Colonial Stores.
