The ques tion is which way we are growing Christians should be growing up ward toward goodness, truth and love, following the teachings of Jesus Christ as best we can under stand those lessons and apply them to the situations and conditions in our lives. There is very real danger that we shall fail to let Christian truth grow in our lives so that we bring forth good fruit. Once Jesus explained a parable by saying. “Now the par able is this: The seed is the word of God, And those by the wayside are they that have heard; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word from their heart, that they may not believe and be saved. And those on the rock are they who, when they have heard, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. And that which fell among the thorns, these ‘af'e they that have heard, and as they go on their way are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring forth no fruit *o perfection. And that in the good ground, these are such as in an hon est and good heart, having heard the word, hold it fast, and bring fruit with patience.” (Luke 8:11- 15). In front of the Little Church on the Lane of which I am pastor is a row of hug£ oaks. When our first building was eT^gBed there in 1924, they were magtbfi^ent specimens. They were 1 and are sUliAmong the largest and probably the oldest trees in Myers Park, Charlotte. In the 32 years which have elapsed since I first knew them they have not grown greatly in size, but they have be come more beautiful. The> are among the'few survivors from-the day when Myers Park was Myers farm. Unless attacked by disease, they will probably be here after I am gone Strong lives are like that They grow but surely, and as they in crease in size they grow in strength and beauty. We are living in a day when haste, speed have brought us many unhap py results. Men are dropping off in their prime from sudden heart at tacks, much of it brought on by the strain and worry of high pressure living. • . Young people graduating from our high schools and colleges are caught up by the modern idea of haste. They want to step into posi tions of responsibil^v and high ,sal ary When they marry, too many of them want to commence on the level their parents reached only af ter years of effort. Education has even been thrown Tbto high gear. I have heard many boys N *md girls discuss their school work The chief aim of many is sim ply to pass tht* course. There have always been such, ar.d many of my generation have seen the day when they have wished that they had spent their days in school with the aim of acquiring knowledge. I remember one course th which I gave but very little studying until the day before examination. 1 “crammed” successfully and pass ed the course, but left college with out any knowledge of it. Those preparing for the profes sions dare not do that if they expect to succeed. If your doctor came into your home when you were ill, look ed you over, and then said that he would have to go back to his office and look up your case to prescribe, you would get another doctor.
