Page Twelve THE C LINTON CHRONICLE Thursday, June 7,1956 Survey Shows Tax Yield Per Pupil In County School District Among Lowest The assessed valuation ol all taxable property per pupil enroll ed in public schools in South Carolina ranges from a high of $2,699 to $320 92. according to a survey recently made by Lahrens County School District 55, P. M. Coble, executive secretary of the South Carolina Education Associ ation, reported this week. The assessed value peY pupils is the lowest in the Summerton dis trict of Clarendon county and is highest in the Pelzer-Williamston district of Anderson county. ^ While Coble explained that the consideration of the millage in the various districts was mean ingless unless the percentage of valuation to assessment was known the highest reported mill- age was 57^ in York town dis trict; followed by 56 at Mullins. 54 at Orangeburg, and Britton’s Neck; and 53 at Aiken and Mar ion town districts. The lowest local millage for school operating purposes: Fair- field county, 22; McCormick county. 23; Cameron and Beau fort, 24; and Clinton and Lau rens, 25 Here are the figures reported for Laurens county’s two school districts: No. 56 — Assessed valuation 1955, 6,104,650; enrollment 1954- 55, 5,788; assessed value per pu pil. 1955. $1.088 44; local school millage, 1955-56 — 25^ yield per pupil, 1955-56, $25 96; rank per pupil, 1955-56—87. No 56 — Assessed valuation, 1955, $5,734,150; enrollment, 1954- 55—4,360; assessed value per pu pil, 1955. $1,315.17; local school millage, 1955-56 — 25; yield per pupil, 1955-56, $32 88; rank per pupil. 1955-56—70. " Coble praised the Laurens County district, of which C. K. Wright is superintendent, for making the statistical study. He said the enrollment figures were taken from the school district of South .Carolina and the assessed valuation and millage for loc^l school purposes were secured from the state educational fi nance committee. The study also showed that the Rock Hill district secured the greatest tax yield per pupil, with $117.13 being raised locally for each student. The yield is figur ed upon ’100 per cent collections. Laurens, w'hich made the study, has a yield per pupil of $25.96— ranking 37th among the 105 dis tricts. Rock Hill has an assessed valu ation of $17,117,122, a total of 7,307 pupils, $2,342.56 is the as sessed valuation per pupil and the district had in 1955-56 local school millage'of 50. Summerton district not only has the lowest assessed valuation per pupil, but also has the lowest yield — $12-84. In other words. Coble explained, the pupils of Rock Hill benefit from local $104 29 more than the pupils in school funds to the extent of the Summerton district. Sergeant Franklin entered the army in 1952 and completed basic He is a firing battery chief in training at Camp Shelby, Miss. Battery C of the division’s 33rd Field Artillery battalion. The list contains about 2,000 more names than weig on the books for the first primary two years ago when 6,000 voters ac tually were cast. There are two more precincts. Clinton City was divided into two precincts and another was added at Maddens. There now agg 46 precincts. Two ballot boxes will be placed at each precinct this year with separate managers for the nomi nation of county officers and for the referndum on the method of choosing school district trustees. L. Parkinson Retires This Year Dr. Burney L. Parkinson, who was at one time president of Presbyterian college, is retiring this year as professor of educa tion and psychology at Mary Washington college of the Uni versity of' Virginia, according to information sent out from Fred ericksburg, Va., seat of the col lege. Before going to Mary Washing ton, Dr. Parkinson was president for 20 years of Mississippi State college^ Before that he had a long educational career in South Carolina, being president of Pres byterian college for one year. The news release also mention ed Mrs. Parknson, who also has had a distinguished career in edu cation and civic enterprises. Traffic Deaths In County Last Year Almost Double 1954 Out of the 731 traffic fatalities I which occurred in South Carolina last year, 21 of the victims met death in Laurens county, accord ing to state highway department accident records. This county also claimed 173 of the state’s 11,125 traffic in juries and 426 of the 29,730 traf fic accidents throughout South Carolina. Traffic accidents^ injuries and deaths showed a marked increase in the state last year compared to the 1954 totals. Laurens coun ty had 11 fatalities in 1954. South Carolina’s 1954 traffic deaths to taled 564 while injuries were 9,- 26 and injuries amounted to 266,230. This county had 187 in juries and 426 accidents during the year. — —t Accident reports are required by law from all drivers Involv ed.
