JAMES C. CRAINE ELECT » • Ryan F. Lawson (Farmer-Business Man) AS YOUR County Commissioner 'lb m • Progressive • Hard Worker •• Efficient . r • Economical, (4 • 1 ■ * Promises Honest — Fair Dealing Administration Fellow Democrats of Laurens County: I am asking to be nominated on June 12th for State Senator for Laurens County. In asking for re-election I solicit your vote on my record and on my pledge for the future. In the eight minutes allotted in the speaking campaign, one can say very little. For that reason I had printed a pamphlet giving part of construc tive measures carried out during my term. 1 hope you have received and read-^me of these pamph lets. You will note'that I have given full credit where due for any accomplishments during my administration. I resent the accusation of me by one of my opponents as “Big I” Wilson. On the front page of this circular was the fol lowing: “The man who took the LEAD in covering Laurens County with black top roads, HELPED improve the schools and HELPED keep the levy down.’’ In every instance I said I “helped” in the accomplishments. The record shows that Laurens County is in sound, financial shape and that much progress has been made in the county during the past several years. In presenting my record, I have no desire to enter into a name calling contest, to discuss per sonalities, or to engender any bitterness between any of the candidates. I shall simply render an ac count of my acts and views on important issues facing us. As Senator I have attempted to do what I could for the school children of our county. My acts in trying to get sufficient funds to operate various schools as requested by school trustees are well known. My acts with reference to keep ing separate white and colored schools are mat ters of public record. I was co-author of a Joint Resolution and voted for every Act, Resolution and Recommendation of the Gressette Committee favoring segregation. At no time have I written speeches on segregation or on any other subject to be read by anyone at any time anywhere. EVERY VOTE THAT I HAVE CAST HAS BEEN AGAINST INTEGRATION AND FOR SEGRE GATION. EVERY UTTERANCE OF MINE, WRITTEN OR SPOKEN, HAS BEEN AGAINST INTEGRATION AND FOR SEGREGATION. ANYONE SAYING OTHERWISE IN DISTORT ING THE TRUTH. I agree one hundred per cent with the Honorable James F. Byrnes when he says: “The Supreme Court must be curbed.” 1 agree with him when he says, “That the people of the South are law-abiding but that they will do everything that is possible in a lawful manner to keep segregation in our public schools. To this end 1 dedicate my full ability. I voted for and worked for good roads. Over 400 miles have been black topped during my term. 1 have worked for having church' and cemetery yards improved and beautified, and more than 58 beautiful church grounds stand as symbols to this work. I shall not bo satisfied until every tax payer has an equal road to every other taxpayer. 1 have worked for a better County Library, a better County Health Department, and a better County Home. The officials of these institutions will bear this out. 1 have worked and voted for better facilities, more room and equipment and better pay for em ployees of Whitten Village. A fine job is being done at this institution for 1,750 handicapped hu man beings. I pledge my continued support. Many of my efforts m State Senator have been for the children of the county, mentally and physically handicapped and for many others who cannot vote. As Senator I have tried to serve all sections and all people in a fair and impartial manner. It has not been my policy to soak the rich nor to favor one group over the other. I have tried to do the best 1 could for the county as a whole. I did help kill a higher income tax bill as passed > j - * , i by the House. Former Senator Charles E. Daniel wrote me on March 9, 1956, that the passage of such a Bill would GREATLY HANDICAP THE FUTURE INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT OF SOUTH CAROLINA. And we are trying to get new industry. New industry desires a favorable tax structure. Laur ens County has a favorable tax structure. New industry favors a place free from feuds between labor and capital and a place where we have peo ple of honor and character. The Delegation from Laurens County has done its part, I think. The Delegation, of which I am a part, has offered to pay for part of water, to provide public roads, and public parking areas for new industry. The Delegation recently appropriated $12,000.00 for a pipe line from Clinton to a new industry west of Clinton. Several days ago the Delegation was requested to arrange funds for an eight inch pipe line for carrying water from Laurens to the I^urens Air Port. I shall gladly do my part to carry out this request. In all of my dealings as Senator 1 have tried to he constructive, to build up rather than tear down. I have tried to give courteous and helpful response to every public request that has been - made of me. As Senator 1 have never diverted any public funds for my personal gain. 1 have paid out the sum of $495.00 as part payment for grading a road in Forest Hills. 1 do not claim that I paid the county for black topping, but 1 did pay Ben Hun- - ter and his brother for grading t^he road, which work has been done by the county for other peo ple. The story of the black top road, about which an accusation has been made against me, can best he told by Mr. R. M. George, who owned the land through which the road was planned before 1 bought it; by Supervisor Bennie B. Blakely, and by the 23 owners of nice tax-producing residences in this newly developed area, some of whom had already built homes Before the road was black topped. Some owners in this area as yet have not been able to get black top road in front of their house. During the past session, I was appointed by Lt. Gov, E. Fritz Bollings as a member of the Free Conference Committee. I am a member of the Finance Committee and chairman of one other committee, vice chairman of four other com mittees and have served on many other commit tees. This public recognition of my service shows in what esteem 1 am held by my fellow Senators, by the Lt. Governor, and by the Governor of South Carolina. ' ^ I guarantee you that 1 shall continue to fight for local self-government and for States Rights and to curb the growing tendency of centralized government. /\ I have tried to serve as best 1 could. Some times I have voted for measures that possibly were unpopular, but I voted my conviction. 1 have never dodged an issue nor been a fence straddler on any question. 1 am recorded as voting four times on a Local Option Bill as introduced by me as co-author, and one time on a House Bill similar to this BilL (See Senate Journal). 1 was present when the Bill was “read the third time, passed and ordered sent to the House of Representatives. I was not “in Florida” when these votes were taken. You have a choice of four candidates, each of whom has served you in a legislative capacity. The office of Senator belongs to you. Select the man whom you thnik can best serve after taking into consideration his past accomplishments, his attitude toward the problems of the future, and his ability to serve and get things done for Laur ens County. jn' ' Ralph T.
