Sven after' its long summer blooming season, its foliage usually adds to the riot of fall color. The freeae of last Match hit them back at p&aces. But they came out and were beautiful the past summer. There is no more hearty shrub or flower. Once planted, they stay there for years and years, despite neglect and even aban donment. At many spots their bloom in summer still marks old house places, where only a few brickbats remain. Given attention and pruned back some, nothing is more col orful than these bushes. And their beauty comes during the long summer months, despite drought, storm, or other advers ity . The planting season for crape myrtles is rgiht now, while, they are dormant. Their easy beauty should adorn every homestead. They come in voried shades, from a sort of purplish pftk and watermelon red to light pinks, cream and whites. My favorite is the watermelon rod. Bumper yields of com were gotten, too, at places with it, for there were some local drought spots. And this fall I have seen it at work on truck and early grazing in parts Of the state where it was dry, especially the up country. County Agent Livingston of Dillon, told me they had at least 30 new irrigation systems when 1 was there in the early summer And Xing Of Marion said theirs had jumped from 13 in 1954 to over 50 this year. They were busy digging water holes for ir rigation and livestock water. He said he lost count of the number when it got above 200. A study of weather records shows that the years are few and far between when irrigation would not have been needed at some time of the year. One farm er told me his paid for itself this year, even though he did not use it. Having it, he planted hty to- baoco closer and fertilized it bet ter. The increased yield result ing more than paid all he had put in his irrgiatkm system. And now he has it there as future in surance. That’s what the peach grower has to weather. And even that next pay day has to still run the gauntlet of weather that got it this year. There is much study now of some sort of all-risk crop insur ance. In this good day and time when many groups have some income, the fanner sure needs it sort of rather effective insured too. There was a time he was able, in a measure, to weather the disasters that struck. But costs were low then and natur al resources great. Not so now. Costs are high, and seem to be ever getting higher. And nat ural resources, such as virgin lands and timber, are not avail able any more to throw intq the hopper when needed. Surely there is a way to work out some sort of equitable dis aster insurance for the grower of varied crops. We will watch the experts’ efforts along this line with keen interest. Beys An That Way As kids we had our sling-shots, too. Last week I told you of our slings, which are quite different from sling-shots. We roamed the woods much. And our eyes were ever alert for forks in dogwood that were just right for sling-shot prongs. We usually found the best ones where logging had been done a year or so before. When dog woods were mutilated a lot, they would send strong sprouts up that often forked just right. When we found these we’d cut them and roughly peel them down to the right size. Then we’d stick them up under the well shed to dry and season foi months. The wood would get very hard and stroog. We didn't have sandpaper, but pieces of broken glass served to scrape them down to the right size, and they were as smooth as ivory. We took infinite pride in the beauty of our sling shot prongs. And if they were not perfectly symmetrical when we got them, we’d bend and tie them just right. Then seasoning and dry ing in that position, they stayed We didn't have automobile in ner tubes then. So we got our sling shot rubbers by ordering off and getting them from Sears- Roebuck. It was a great day when that small package came in the mail. They were com plete bands, with a weak place of cleavage in them. There is where we cut them . Then one end of each was securely tied to a prong . And making that tie was an art. No ordinary tie would hold. Then a smell strip of rawhide leather was made equally secure to the two loose ends of the bers. And in that ydu put your pebble, drew back, and shot. Now a sling shot is far more accurate than a sling, though not nearly so powerful. We boys in the Stone Hills got to where we could kill birds or break bottles with our sling shots.
