Scout Larry Gamer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Gamer and Scout Rhett Butler, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Butler, left Green ville Sunday by bus with other scouts for a three weeks trip west. Most of the time will be spent at Philmont Scout Ranch, Cimarron, New Mexico. Miss Kittie Mae Moseley spent Friday and Saturday in Colum bia. Miss Marlene Thomas observ ed her birthday on July 24. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Prater and son spent the week-end in Columbia with Mr. and Mrs. Vaughn Prater. Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Moore and daughter, Gale, of Brandywine, Md., were recent guests of Mr. and Mrs. Hoipce Hamm. Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Bartley spent Sunday in Greenwood vis iting relatives. Seaman Martin Bolick of the USS Hannock, has just returned to San Dieigo, CaUf., after spend ing a 19-day leave with his par- eits, Mr. and Mrs. Milton Bolick. Martin will sail for duty at Pearl Harbor on August 15. Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Smith and son, Michael, were recent visitors at Myrtle Beach. Mr, and Mrs. Smith in company with Miss Bernice Smith of Laurens, also visited relatives in Columbia. Mr. and Mrs. B. E. R. Lanford. Gloria has just return ed after going back to Beaufort to visit her parents, S-Sgt. and Mrs. Lester Sweatt for 2 weeks. Messrs. Miss Anne Lowman is spend ing the week in Lando with Miss Gail Templeton. Mead ors of Princeton attended the State meeting of the American Cancer Society in Columbia lost Thursday. The group also en joyed tea at the Governor’s man sion. Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Chitwood and Gary, Mr. and Mrs. Grey Stroud and children recently en- poyed a trip to Folly Beach. Mr. and Mrs. Chitwood and Mrs. P. T. Matthews also visited Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Quite a number of guests from Joanna and Clinton enjoyed the affair. Mrs. Bowers, the former Miss Patsy Whitmire, received a shower of gifts. Birth Anaouncamont Osborn# Mr. and Mrs. Billy F. Osborne announce the birth of a daugh ter, Cynthia Denise, at Joanna hospital on July 20. Mrs. Os borne will be remembered as the former Miss Elizabeth Lyons of Joanna. MYF Swimming Party Members of the Methodist Youth Fellowship and their guests enjoyed a swimming party at the Icoal pool Tuesday evening. After swimming the group enjoyed a picnic. Out of town guests were Miss Dolly Cruoch of Moiuvtville, and Miss Linda Adair oft Orangeburg, and Tommy Daviqf of the Hopewell community. Mrs. P. W. Turner is the teach er of the department. Mrs. Atkins passed away in a Colum bia hospital and burial was Sat urday in the fanlily plot at Gaff ney. Among the survivors are two sons, Clyde and Tom At kins of Joanna. Those attending the funeral from Joanna were pMr. and Mrs. Clyde Atkins, Mr. aid Mrs. Tom Atkins, Mr. and Mrs. Reginald Rush ton and sons, Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Cole. Mrs. Johnson Passes The community was deeply saddened Monday when news was received of the sudden death of Mrs. Eva Johnson. Mrs. John son was affectionately known as “Big Mama” to all her friends and had just recently moved to Anderson. Funeral srevices were held Wednesday afternoon at Ep- worth Methodist church. A great host of friends gathered to pay tribute and the floral offerings were many. Surprise Gathering Saturday night Mrs. Johnny Moore honored Mr. Moore with a surprise birthday gathering at their home on Blalock Drive. The invited guests were mem bers of the ball club, their wives and friends. The entire group joined Mrs. Moore in making the affair a surprise for the honored guest. The appointed party table was overlaid with an exquisite lace cover and centered with an ar rangement of pink carnations and shasta daisies in a silver con tainer, flanked on either side by tall blue tapers in silver holders. The cake* was two-tiered and frosted in white with pink and blue decoration and tiny blue burning candles. Refreshments consisting fo chicken salad sand wiches, haih and cheese biscuits, potato chips, assorted pickles, af ter dinner mints, cake and iced drinks were served buffet style. Assisting Mrs. Moore in serv ing were Mrs. Dan Kirby, Mrs. Bill Thomas and Miss Mary Mc Leod. Mr. Moore received many handsome gifts. Mrs. Poog Honors Grandchildren Mrs. L, H. PO»g honored two of her grandchildren with a party no Friday and Saturday evenings at her home on Milton Road. The honorees were Miss Jean Poag, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Poag of Goldsboro, N. C., and Mickey Poag, son of Mr. and Mrs. Horace Poag of Baltimore, Md. The young people enjoyed gambs and conversation. Mrs. Poag served home-churned ice cream of various flavors, cake and soft drinks. With Tb# Sick Friends of Russell Gilliam, son of Rev. and Mrs. J. O. Gil liam, of Lyman, will regret to learn he underwent surgery on his foot at Spartanburg General hospital Wednesday. Russell is the nephew of Rev. and Mrs. P. W. Turner. Sorry to report Mrs. Murlee Farmer of Ninety-Six has under gone surgery at Self Memorial hospital in Greenwood. She is now recuperating at her home on Whitin St., Ninety-Six. Judy Bednebaugh, daughter fo Mr. and Mrs. McFall Beden- baugh, is a patient at Joanna hos pital for treatment. Mrs. Bessie Smith is a patient for treatment at Joanna hos pital. Mrs. P. T. Matthews is recup erating at her home on Brown ing avenue following a recent fall. Miss TOni Stroud is ill at her home. Taao-Aga Club News An evening of fellowship and fun was enjoyed by members of the Joanna Teen-Age club Friday evening. The group went swim ming in the Joanna pool and later enjoyed a watermelon slic ing. On Friday the group will leave the club house at 2 KM) p. m. by Foundation bus for a picnic and swimming party at Curry’s Lake.
