Dailey, is spending six weeks at the Boy Scout New Mexico, taking junior lead er training courses. Neill who will be a senior at Clinton high school next year, has served as senior patrol lead er for the Boy Scout Troop 111, and as assistant scout master. The trip was awarded Neill as a prize for being the first scout to attain Eagle rank from the troop since the local Kiwanis club be came its sponsor. , New Assistant Manager At Belk's Gene McMullan has accpeted a position as assistant manager at Belk’s Department Store. Mr. McMullan comes to Clin ton from Georgetown where he has managed the B&P Store for Belk’s. Previously he was as sistant manager of the J. C. Pen ney Store in Greenwood. Mr. and Mrs. McMullan and small daugh ter, Nan, are residing in the Bla lock Apartments at 101 Stone wall street. They are members of the Baptist church. Health Department Ending Polio Clinics The County Health Depart ment is finishing their set polio clinic this week. Those chil dren who are due the second dose and were unable to get it may report to the County Health Department in Laurens on week days from 9 a. m. to 5 p. m. and on Saturdays from 9 until 12 noon, or at the Clinton Health Center Tuesday mornings from 10 a. m. to 12 noon and Thurs day afternoons from 2 until 4:30 p. m. Barbecue at Renno, Funds to Sardis Church The Woman’s Society of Chris tian Service of Sardis Methodist church at Renno will sponsor a barbecue dinner served at Lake Reynosa on Monday, July 4, at 12 o’clock. The proceeds will be used for the remodeling of Miss Janet Sloan Places In Contest Miss Janet Sloan, daughter of Mr. nad Mrt. N. L. Sloan, Sr., head majorette at Clinton high school .recently attended the Sun Fun Festival at Myrtle Beach sponsored by the Masonic Order there. Competing with almost 40 con testants Miss Sloan placed sec ond. Miss Carolyn Willard of Chesterfield won first place. The two winners will represent South Carolina in the national baton twirling contest in St. Paul, Minn., next February. ^^ Dr. Wood Planning Summer Research Dr. Burrell L. Wood, professor of chemistry at Furman Univer sity, will leave today for Wash ington where he will spend the summer as a chemical researcher in the Naval Research Labora tories. Dr. Wood, whq has been on the Furman faculty^ since 1949, is well known in this area for his work in promoting science train ing and education. He was direc tor of the Western Carolina Sci- ience Fair which was held in I Greenville in April. 1 Dr. Wood, a native of Clinton, is a graduate of Presbyterian College and received his M.S. degree from the University of Georgia and his Ph.D. degree from the University of North Carolina. Dr. Fulton said that Christian education is the only way to an enduring world order in the world; and outside of Jesus Christ no power on earth or in heaven can lead the world to truth and reason. t Dr. Fulton’s father, Dr. S. P. 'Fulton, was among the first chil dren to enter Thornwell and was for more than 40 years a mission ary to Japan. Taking part in the service was Dr. Lynn, Dr. Macdonald, Dr. LaMotte, and Dr. James E. Gra ham, of Portmouth, Va. At 2:30 in the afternoon a re cital was given by Miss Luva McDonald, director of music at Thornwell, on the Stutts Me morial Chimes. At 3:00 p. m. a communion service was held during which Dr. R. Matthew Lynn, of Mid land, Texas, gave the commun ion meditation. Administering the sacraments of communion; were Dr. LaMotte and Rev. James M. Terrell, of Piedmont, Ala. Former students at Thornwell who are now deacons and elders in their respective home church es assisted in the service. I At 4:30 a drop-in at the home of Dr.- and Mrs. Macdonald was given when they greeted the for- j mer pupils and other friends of Thornwell. At 7:30 in hte evening Rev. Clarence Sistare, president of the Palmer Children’s Home at Co lumbus, Miss., and Rev. Allen Ja cobs, president of the Alabama Children’s Home at Talladega, Ala., told of their work, which is similar to that being done at Thornwell.
