This lake, named in honefr of William S. Murray, one of the first men to recognize the possibilities of the power project, has a capacity of 92,- 000,000,000 cubic feet of water. Forty-one miles Iona and 14 miles across at its widest point, the lake covers about 50,000 acres of land, and has a shore line of more than 500 miles. The dam, which when built was the largest earthen dam in the world, is 211 feet high and about 1% miles long. It is more than a fifth of a mile thick at its base. Built entirely of ma terial found at or close to the site, it contains more than 11,- 000,000 cubic yards of material. The project, owned and op erated by the S. C. Electric A Gas Company, furnishes elec tricity to Columbia and many other cities and towns in the central, southern and western sections of the state. Mrs. H. M. Lukstat and Mrs. C.
