Pink roses and pink tapers in epergne effect adorn ed the table. Countv Gang Captain Dies After Shooting Laurens, Oct. 23. — Capt. Eugene Davenport, 64, one of two prison guards shot last Wednesday by a Negro convict died early Friday morning in the Laurens county hos pital. Mr. Davenport died as a resqit ofj a stomach wound which Sheriff IW. A. Lowery said R. C. Williams, ! 135, inflicted as he escaped from a Laurens county chain gang. Jud Elmore, the second guard, suf-j fered an arm wound. Sheriff Lowery said Williams had ; been charged with murder and as- Isault and battery with intent to kill. The second warrant is in connection with the shooting of Elmore. At Union, Sheriff Rochelle Boyle said that Williams, who was carried to the Union county jail for safe keeping, had been moved to the State penitentiary at Columbia. Sheriff Lowery said Mr. Elmore entered the enclosure following a disturbance Wednesday night in the camp compound.
