He's been practicing jit himself at home since he entered the White House. Even if he wanted to go abroad, he’s been too busy here to jgo. He's been sending some of those closest to him. Vice-President Nixon is the latest to get his marching papers. He’ll leave in the fall for the Far East and South Asia. Others who preceded him as good will ambassadors were Secretary of State Dulles, Mutual Security Direc tor Harold E. Stassen, and the Presi dent’s youngest brother, Dr. Milton S. Eisenhower. Eisenhower showed how much stock he put in the personal ac quaintance idea almost from the start of his presidency when he be gan inviting members of Congress to White House breakfasts. These groups, in batches of a doz en or so, put their feet under the White House table at the same time. If they hadn’t met before, they ‘be came acquainted there, with one an other and the President. Months ago Eisenhower sent Dulles and Stassen on a fast tour of (^jthe West European capitals where they met the heads of state face-to- jface, discussed their problems, ex pressed sympathy, sought to build up good will. They were hardly home before they left on the same kind of mis- countries visited, to hear their views, gain first-hand impressions, to arry the sincere greetings of the people of the United States . . . and the personal greetings of the Presi dent . . . M No doubt the reports brought back by those personal ambassadors—on the problems, attitudes, and expec tations of the countries visited — should be invaluable to Eisenhower in shaping his foreign policies. And the people of the countries visited cannot but be impressed by the effort Eisenhower is making to get to know them and the interest he is showing in them. These expedi tions can hardly make enemies and should make friends. The Russians are probably con cerned about it, just as this country would be if the Communists sent their foreign minister, Molotov, around the world to have private talks with heads of state every where. In the long run, though, since these heads of state are practical men, this country will be judged by what it does for them, or about them, more than by plesaant conversa tions. i Report of Condition of Bank of Clinton Of Clinton, In ihe State of South Carolina At the Close of Business on Jane SO, 1953 ASSETS Cash, balances with other banks, including reserve balances, and cash items in process of collection $ 447,703.77 United States Government obligations, direct and guaranteed. .. 614,723.00 Obligations of States and political subdivisions 102,8712.71 Loans and discounts 575,740.00 Furniture and fixtures 6,706.28 Real estate owned other than bank premises - 9,500.00 ■ I ■■■■ TOTAL ASSETS $1,759,247.78= LIABILITIES Demand deposits of individuals, partnerships and corpor ations $1,286,467.45 Time deposits, of individuals, partnerships, and corporations 25,292.43 Deposits of United States Government (including postal sav ings A 6,474.33 Deposits of States and political subdivisions 2©8,084.81 Other deposits (certified and officers’ checks, etc.)- 2,594.36 TOTAL DEPOSITS - *1,500,913.38 Other liabilities - - 100.08 Say— T SAW IT IN THE CHRONICLE” Thank Ton * scaping. McGill, Atlanta Georgia, begaiva ^ battle with fear. He did the things that he feared to do, which brought about mostly trouble. He was afraid of girls—so he tor mented them; afraid to fight—so he fought; afraid of discipline and so he was constantly in trouble at school. The fellows called him “Wild Bill,” and the teachers called him “The Smart Alex." In business life the same situations arose, ex cept now they became more serious in nature. He left his first job as a roofing salesman to become manager of a roofing department in a local hardware store. A few months later be beat up the bookkeeper and was fired. He was young, cocky, and tough—so he thought! Finally, after an average amount of success and failure, he stood before his doctor who said he must enter a hospital to be fed scientifically for stomach ulcers brought on by business pres sure. But Bill McGill says he now knows pressure came from within—not without! He was not being crushed, but literally about to explode from inward pressure which he now knows to have been brought on by himself. He was to find a new way of life. v to do ides! CARNEGIE If his trouble was arising from worries, the simple thing to — J * * ' a Wonderful id seemed to be to relax and stop worrying. What This is what he did: 1. He got the old chip off his shoulder. Ceased being so bellige rent and avoided every argument He let the other fellow saye face. S. He began to smile at people. Not a silly grin, but a great, big, genuine SMILE. This was not easy—He was not in the habit of smiling at folks. But wonder of wonders, he found that people would smile back at him. 3. But teal relief from pressure within came when he became' genuinely interested in others. This enabled him to acquire out ward Interests—to think about something besides himself and what he wanted. The ulcer got well all by itself 1 It simply isn’t there.
