Was the result a pre-ar ranged agreement to endorse the Stevenson-Sparkman ticket? Is the Stevenson tickei. a Truman ticket, c nceived and born in the White House, an offspring of the Truman- rtes’’ Well, if the dominant lead ens of the party in this state called for support of the Sevenson tick et have they changed heart “since 1948? Or. were they merely sub merged in 1948 by the onslaughts cf Strom Thurmond, George War ren and others 0 A review of 1948 will show that the leaders,-who to day urge support oi ‘ the , regular ticket, took no active part for the States Rights campaign of 1948. They have not changed,, in effect; they have denounced Truman and Trumanism; but they were regular in 1948! they are regular today. What has happened is that the real effectiveness of 1948 is lost be cause Strom Thurmond and h’.s staff are not in power. Certainly every argument for' separation in 1948 applies today if we care to think straight. The water is muddled because Senator Maybank and Senator Johnston, in all good conscience, regard their championships as of paramount importance. And many f others are equally impelled to sup port the Stevenson ticket by reason of some political side-issue, which, to an outsider, is largely a con-; fusion of thought and a regrettable misconception of the fundamental! issue. And many of the speakers wore like muffled drums. Governor Byrnes could hardly be understood by me. though he is ac customed to speak. Gov. Byrnes was sincere in an attitude of wait- and-see, but he lost the opportun ity to become a leader. Leader ship is based on positive convic tion. high courage and unswerving; purpose. The Governor adopts a' respectable middle-of-the-road po- 1 sition. but it is not leadership. ’ J Here I should like to speak ofj the fairness and liberality of the; Chairman, John I. Rice. Senator| Brown moved endorsement of the i Stevenson ticket, but did not great ly elaborate. R. M. Kennedy of Camden; Baskin of Lee; Thomas P-j Stoney of Charleston; Douglas Mc Kay of Columbia; Carroll Nance of Clinton; George Warren of Hamp ton; spoke vigorously against the Stevenson ticket. Senators Maybank and Johnston j sppke for it They don’t like some things, but they will support the ticket. Conclusion: Here we stand, the South Carolina delegates. Every-; one wonders where the people | stand. Are the people for the office-1 holders and their chief supporters? j Or. are the people ready to think j and act indpendently? Are we for the loaves and fish-1 es, only, the proverbial mess of pottage? Or are the people desir-j ous of cleaning house? Men in office, whether National, State, County or Party, will not lead against the Party: leadership must come from those who have no affiliations, no ties, that bind them to the Party organization; no per sonal interest that beclouds their judgment and confuses the issue. Men on the outside can look at the problem with clear view and with a finer spiritual vision: they are not wedded to their idols, as The Book tells us of Ephriam. The Truman ites—and Mr. Stev enson—tell us of the South that we must get rid of our prejudices, though founded in traditions of long standing. Let us take a leaf out of their book and get rid of some political prejudices of long standing. I admit the inaccuracy of the word “prejudice 4 *; we hold certain predelections as a sacred memory of our heroic grandfath ers, but the very foundations of our belief, the rock of our faith— all have been destroyed by the Po litical Party of our fathers which has today nothing that our fathers respected. As your self, each one of you, why have we been rock-ribbed sup porters of the National Democrat ic party. You will think of Recon struction, of the forcing on us of many things obnoxious to us. Well, that is today being done, but by the very party we have been support ing. Do we pledge our allegiance to a party label, regardless of its plat form and practice; or, <Jo we stand four-square for the rtaditions and ideals of our people? ft WITH THE NEW S-T-R-E-T-C-H YOUR FAMILY’S FOOD BUDGET Save money and serve better menus with a new Philco Freezer ... buy the best foods when prices are lowest... and store them for as long as you like.
