Poag, Bill Poag and Miss Sheila Poag were week-end guests of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Poag and family in Golds boro, N. C. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bragg, Jr., and children of Clinton, were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Simmons, the occasion being the birthday of Miss Judy Simmons. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Hoisonback and children visited Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Kyzer in Newberry Sunday. Mrs. Philip Foster and son of Laurens, spent the week-end with her sister, Mrs. Cecil Bishop and Mr. Bishop. On Sunday guests of the Bishops were Mrs. Pierce and Ray Pierce enroute from Charlotte, N. C., to Gatlinburg, Tenn. Mrs. Paul Taylor of Greenwood, recently spent the week with her sister-in-law, Mrs. Horace Hamm, Sr., and Mr. Hamm. Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Lowman, Sr., Misses Marlene and Betty,, Ann Lowman joined Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Lowman, Jr., and son of Green wood, and spent Sunday' at White f Rock with Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Low- man. Mrs. Joe Purdy of Newberry at tended the piano recital Friday night at Joanna school; Mrs. Vernon Garner was called to Newberry Saturday due to ill ness of her grandfather, J. T. Dick- ert. Mr. Dickert is a patient at Newberry County hospital. _Miss Gertrude Webb, Mrs. Betty Mrs. W. H. Nobles of Newberry, spent Sunday with Mrs. W. W. Hair and family. Mrs. Laursi Burton and Don Swygert were Monday visitors of Mr. and Mrs. S. M. Ruffin in New berry. Clark Friday. Colie Gruber, CPO, of Charles ton, visited Mr. and Mrs. James | Lovelace Sunday. Mother-Daughter Party The Intermediate and Junior Girls’ Auxiliary, their leaders and mothers attended the associational Mother-Daughter party at Willow- brook club house in Newberry Sat urday. The girls .presented a skit, “The Three Modern Bears,” with Judy Dunlap, Pat Carr, Joann Reeder, Gail Morse and Veda Jester. Miss Ethel Mae Rowe sang “Prayer of a Norwegian Child,” accompanied by Miss Janice Fennell at the piano. Other special skits and music were given by the various auxiliaries of the churches in the association. Miss Auldman, misionary to China, gave an inspirational message. A chicken salad plate with party trimmings was served. Surprise Birthday Celebration Mrs. Ernest Osborne and sons, j Mike and James, pleasantly sur- j prised their husband and father with a family gathering honoring : his birthday recently. Dinner was Nabors and Mrs. Frances Giles pre sented their piano pupils in a joint recital at Joanna school. Fifty- eight young boys and girls were on the program. Superintendent G. N. Foy, presented music awards from Mrs. Nabors to Misses Ethel Mae Rowe and lone Inman for outstandf- ing music the past year. Fishing Trip Enjoyed A group of boys and girls over 12 years of age enjoyed a picnic and fishing trip to Amick’s on Lake Murray Saturday. Twenty - two gathered at Joanna club and board ed the Foundation bus, accompan ied by Johnny Moore, Jimmy Clark and Lefty Price. Mrs. Warren Honored Last Monday evening Mrs. Na omi Sample Warren of Columbia, was honored with a shower at Jo ann* club. Mrs; R. L. Francis led the enter tainment for the evening. Mrs. Warren was presented a lovely cor sage of pink carnations. The hostesses, Mrs. Rhett Ab rams and Mrs. Bluford Nabors, served a salad with cookies, potato chips and iced drinks. The many guests remembered the honoree with dainty gifts. Adams-Davenport Miss Betty Louise Adams became the bride of James Walter Daven port in an impressive ceremony at Epworth Methodist parsonage May 13 at 8 o’clock. Rev. Joe W. Giles, cousin of the bride, officiated, using the double ring ceremony. Mrs. Giles was the only attendant. The bride was lovely in a soft beige spring suit with matching ac cessories. Her corsage was a pur ple orchid. Mrs. Davenport is the daughter 1 of Mr. and Mrs. John T. Kelly of Williamston. She attended the Williamston public schools and is employed at the Williamston plant of Textron Southern. Mr. Davenport is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Davenport of Pel- zer. He has recently returned from Korea and is serving as a seaman in the navy. Bowen-Satterfield Announcement Mr. and Mrs. B. R. Bowen of Jo anna, announce the marriage of their daughter, Geraldine, to Earl Satterfield, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Satterfield of Clinton, on May 3. The bride wore a light blue suit with light blue and white accessor ies. The couple are residing with the groom’s parents on Academy street in Clinton. Sub-District Meet Tim Maltese Cross sub-district of the MYF met Monday night in Waterloo. , Sixteen members from Joanna attended the meeting. The pro gram was presented by Cokesbury MYF. During the social hour the recre- i ation was led by Rev. Clemson ’ Smith and George Clark of Water loo. Refreshments of cookies and iced drinks were served. The next meeting will be held with Sandy Springs, and Waterloo will present an installation service. RECIPE OF THE WEEK Coconut Apricot Candy (Makes 2 dozen.) 3-4 cup dried apricots 3-4 cup shredded coconut 1-2 teaspoon grated orange rind 1-2 teaspoon grated lemon rind 1 tablespoon orange juice Wash apricots, cover with boil ing water, let stand 5 minutes; drain. Put apricots and coconut through food chopper. Add or ange and lemon rinds and orange juice. Knead mixture until blend ed. If candy is dry, add addition al orange juice to moisten. If too moist, work in small amount of confectioner’s sugar.
