Six teams will compete in the elimination which serves as the final qualifying round for the state high school meet to be held in Co lumbia this weekend. The six teams Aim of Parent-Teacher Association Is Community Service (Written for The Chronicle) » Service to the community was stressed by John S. Glover, presi dent of the Florida Street school PTA in his report at the annual business meeting of the'association Tuesday evening. Urging the need to seek members among all in the community who are interested in PTA objetives, and recommending programs with wide appeal, Mr. Glover expressed the view that “the most useful function we can perform lies in keeping people in- j formed and in creating an enlight ened public opinion concerning child welfare in general and the needs of our public school system. The president mentioned espec ially the work of the Health and Library committees as examples of such service. Referring to propos als for an annual examination of the eyesight of children in the first, fourth and seventh grades at school thus ensuring examination at 2- year intervals, he expressed the hope that such a prog-am might w if C- to( * a y are: Anderson, Rock i be initiated in other elemenutary rll’ .^ reenw J ood - , Spartanburg < chools and ex t €n ded to the 10th P and Packer high of g ra de in high school, adding that ae ’ we might look forward to the day UDC To Sponsor Sale of Flags “Thg - Stephen D. Where many of the common deadly diseases are con cerned he continued, a sound ju venile health program would do much to further '-the principle of prevention rather than cure. Such a program, he said, is already a reality in many places and one that should be among the long term objectives of a PTA organi zation. In connection with the library, he explained that it was originally established with Kiwarjis club funds and that it continues to re ceive funds from this and other sources, and that the library com mittee of the PTA was responsible for its establishment in separate quarters and is the only group re sponsible for the maintenance and promotion of the facilities which are available to all children in the community. In conclusion the president asked for active support from all par ents. The PTA, he said provides the only recognized medium through which parents can make, other than by individual action, their views concerning the school, also providing the school with an effective medium of reach ing and informing parents. Special thanks were expressed to W. R. Anderson, Jr., Wilmot Shealy- and the faculty of Florida Street school for their cooperation and to the police department for provid ing patrols to take care of chil dren crossing streets om their-way to and from school.
