Every reader Of this column, including those who never use air travel, is likewise subject to great danger, as was evidenced in Eliza beth, N. J. The Needed Remedy 'Old Man Gravity' Is Blamed for Most Fatal Airplane Accidents. By ROGER BABSON Babson Park, Fla., Feb 4. — Last week you read that 85 people were killed in airplane accidents during the preceding thirty-eight days in Elizalbeth, New Jersey, ^nd yet ie al American people for the airplane companies not to do more to-tpre- vent such accidents. It is true that they can insure their planes so as to get a new one when a .plane is destroyed, but no insurance can re place lives which they destroy. In my humble judgment, their atti tude is all wrong. A few airplane accidents occur from running into mountains dur ing fog or storm. These are being eliminated by the latest modem alti tude instruments and by radar. With good working in- struments and bright-eyed pilots these accidents should no longer occur. Moger W. Bftbita^ The major cause of airplane accidents is tneir en gine trouble or wing failure or some other breakdown which caus es the airplane to di-op to the ground and the gas tanks to ex plode. This throws the gasoline all spark starts the fire and the pass- over the occupants. Some electric engers are all smothered or burned to death. In short, “Old Man Grav ity” is responsible. This means that these fatal acci dents will continue and increase in number and severity as more planes fly and the size of the planes increases. When the airplane companies advertise they have the biggest planes, they do not tell you that the bigger the plane the more THERE’S There is only one means of pre venting these accidents. This is to discover some partial insulator of gravity, although helicopters may also help in solving the problem. Insulators exist for light, noise, fire, air, heat, cold, magnetism, electri city and even atomic energy. The work of the Gravity Research Foundation at New Boston, New Hampshire, is helping to discover a partial insulator for gravity. This foundation believes that the air plane companies could discover an alloy which would partially insu late gravity if they would only Balanced Budget Sought For State In Chamber Program Columbia, Feb. 3. — The South Carolina State Chamber of Com merce yesterday recommended to the State’s congressmen a seven- point program to insure a balanced Federal budget in 1952-53 without new taxes. It also asked members of the South Carolina delegation to “make government economy in the Fed eral establishment a truly bi-parit- san objective during the 1952 ses sion of Congress.” The seven points, which were outlined in letters from R. E. Hen ry, president of the State Chamber, fire: 1. Adopt a resolution just intro duced by Rep. Frederick R. Cou- dert, Jr., of New York which would impose a maximum ceiling of $11 billion upon Federal expenditures for the fiscal year 1952-53,. except in the event of all-out war. This figure represents the amount of revenue expected next year under existing tax laws. / 2. In order to implemenV^he Coudert resolution, apply the kmfe vigorously to appropriations. 3. Refuse to authorize any new spending programs not absolutely . . . , ,, , | essential to the military or defense I ° of this country. ’ 4. Reduce the general level of do so. When a partial insulator is discoverea the exterior of all planes would be covered with alloy. The weight of the plane would then be so reduced that a fall need not cause a fatal disaster. Besides, the plane and contents would be so much lighter it would be much less liable to engine and other difficul ties and hence less liable to fall. Hqw Airplane Companies Reply The airplane companies claim that scientists say it is impossible to discover a partial insulator for claiming that they were impossible, gravity. My answer is that when I The Babson Institute has the third or better than the government. „ ' 7. Continue efforts to reduce waste in Federal operations by adoption of the economy recom mendations of,the Hoover commis sion and other official survey agen cies. Mr. Henry urged that Federal spending fbr the fiscal year 1952-53, in the absence of all-out conflict, be kept within bounds of revenues anticipated under present Federal tax laws “as a first requirement for a sound national economy in our cold war against Russian Com munist aggression. At the same time he asked con gressmen to “reject decisively any move to increase the staggering tax burden now imposed upon the American people, a burden which under existing laws is expected to exact about one third of the peo ple’s income” The State Chamber president add- edr “As a result of the govern ments refusal or failure to reduce excessive and unnecessary spend ing. Congress passed a new tax law last fall, the third within a single year, to take nearly $6 bil lion from the American people in additional Federal ta^es. “The time has come when all of us should remember that the na tional income was earned by and belongs to the people of the United States, and not to the government which they created. It is time for the government to . stop taking larger and larger shares of the people’s income through taxation and to begin taking serious steps to live within the large tax income it already has acquired ” Here’s refreshment^ • i. ■ # real refreshment grant-in-aid programs to state and local governments, in accordance with the proposal made last year by the joint committee on economic report, of which Sen. O’Mahoney (D-Wyo.) is chairman. 5. Critically review and reduce, wherever possible, Federal subsi dies^of eyery nature. 6. Take the government out of business-type undertakings which private enterprise can do as well as was a student at the Massachusetts taught that it would be impossible to use commercially heavier-than- largest collection in the world of I n s t i t u te of Technology I was‘Sir Isaac Newteiv’s writings and we believe that if he were here today he would agree that gravity could air machines.
