Thursday. November 15, 1951 THE CXINTON CHRONICLE i** 'Drastic Action' On Inflation Urged By King Lond 'n.—King George VI warn ed Parliament today that growing inflatjpn threatens Britain’s defense program and the government must take “drastic action.” Prime Minister Winston Church ill’s new Conservative regime will make proposals to fight inflation “in the immediate future,” said the monarchs in his traditional speech from the Throne opening the first formal session of the new Parlia ment. v Churchill was scheduled to elab orate on the speech—which the prime minister and his cabinet bad ptepared—later today. Since the king is still confined to Buckingham Palace recuperat ing from a serious lung operation, the slpeech was read for him at a joint meeting of the Houses of Lords and Commons, held in the Lord’s chamber. The king told Parliament that a “full disclosure must be made to the nation” of the recent serious deterioration in Britain’s economic affairs. He described the problem as • “overshadowing all other domestic matters” which face the new gov- ' emment. Turning to international affairs, King George said Britain i$ de termined to stand fast in the Suez Canal zone and “will try to repair the injuries our rights and interests have suffered in Persia.” The king said Egypt’s attempts to oust Btritish troops from the Canal zone and seize sovereignty over the Sudan, now jointly admin istered by Egypt and Britain, are “illegal and without validity.” He said Britain, the United States, France and Turkey will “press forward with their proposals for joint defense arrangements in the Mideast.” DR.
