Thompson as commander. The first meeting of the organiza tion will be held Friday night, No vember 23, at 7:30 at Bell Street - school with the following taking part on the program: , Ralph N. In speaking of the new organiza tion, Commander Thompson and of ficers said they owe much to C. F. Winn, who has worked closely with them with helpful suggestions and advice in the organization work. He also expressed thanks to many white and colored friends for their words of encouragement and financial con tributions. “We will Work, he said, “for a greater American Legion and a better community.” Officers of the post are Benjamin L. Stationery Dept Tax Increase Inspires Parody The State says the following anonymous parody on Lincoln’s Gettysburg address is making the rounds in Columbia since the new increase in tax rates: “Two score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth upon this nation a new tax, conceived in des peration and dedicated to the prop osition that all men are fair game. We are now engaged in a great mass of calculation, testing wheth er this tax payer so confused and so impoverished, can long endure. We are met on form XXX-PDQ- IOU. We have chosen to dedicate a large portion of our income to a final resting place with these men who here spend their lives that we may spend our money. It is al together with anguish and torture that we do this, but in a legal sense, we cannot urtderestimate this tax. The collectors, who corn-* pute here, have gone far beyond our poor power to add and sub tract. Our creditors will little note nor long remember what we pay here, but the bureau of inter- hal revenue vyill never forget what we report. It is rather for us to be here, dedicated to the great task re maining before us—that from these vanished dollars we take increased devotion to the few remaining; and that we here highly resolve that next year will not find us in a much higher bracket.” Fine Progrom Given For Opening Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium Spartanburg, Nov. 13—Installa tion of over 5,000 seats for Pied mont area patrons of Spartanburg's $1,200,000 Memorial auditorium has been completed and booking of na tionally famous entertainment is progressing excellently, the Mem orial Auditorium Commission an nounces. Meanwhile, brisk demand was reported for mail order tickets to the auditorium’s first two great presentations: The United States Navy Band's concert on Saturday night. Dec. 1, when the auditorium will be formally opened and dedi cated with South Carolina Gov ernor James F. Byrnes speaking; and the magnificient "Rodgers and Hammrestein Night" presentation Friday night, Dec. 7. Nominal admission prices with tax included, are: Navy Band concert and the full dedication program, Friday night.
