ELEAZER Clemson Extension Information Specialist Autumn Leaves The greenery that came to hill and hedge with spring, is now tak ing on the bright and burnished hues of autumn. I raved over the coming of spring, after a hard bleak winter. And now that summer is spent, and the har vest is at hand, I look up again and see Nature staging her supreme spectacle of color that is fall. It was the sumac and sourwoods first, punctuating the green of late summer with bits of scarlet. And then red, yellow, gold, orange, and purple gradually grew into the pic ture until the out-of-doors has be come a fairyland of harmonious hues. Ever think of it, how Nature blends her colors? There is perfect harmony on field and woodland now. Yet every color of the rain bow is, or soon will be, there. And, if placed by an unskilled power, it could create 9 pandemonium of clashes that would shock the sensi tive eye. This grand annual symphony of unmatched color is now growing to a peak along every lane and by way. The reds are put there by the sourwoods, black gums, sweet- gums, dogwoods, sumacs, red maples, and certain of the oaks. The varied hues of yellow come to hickory, beech, birch, and poplars And the royal purple is added, too, by the gums, and by the persim mon and the ask trees. Vivid orange shades often coroe to the maple and the sassafras. And the needed contrast of green for the background is supplied by the pine, holly, cedar, and in the moun tains by the rhodendendron. laurel hemlock, and spruce. The grasses and weeds, too, add to this fall fectival of color or across hill and vale. Delicate tints and rare pastel shades of leaf and bloom make fairylands out of many an abandoned field or uncut hedge There is no exact peek to this co lossal carnhraL It Just rises from nothing in summer, to a riot in autumn, and fades away into tho somber grays and browns at win ter But you can bet this much, for tho neat few weeks it will be simply breath-taking out there where folks hove room to live. Grain llerage Did you have anywhere to put your gram last June? And do you have anywhere to safely store your com end soybeans now? A few comm uni ties over fhe state have provided that storage in the pest year or so Large elevators are now at Anderscsi, Easley. Ea- tUl and Florence. And I under stand farmers have patronised them heavily. We have placed our confidence in cotton in the pest for several reasons. One of the chief of them is the fact that it is bankable; that is, we can borrow money on it or sell it any day. Well where they grow com, grain, legume, grass seeds, and the like the same thing holds true. They have developed safe drying and storage facilities that make those things safe as collateral too. We are really getting along with producing diversified things here. But for some of them we are sore ly lacking in the facilities that will make them safe bankable crops. These elevators that have started going up over the state are mak ing them that way though. Even if such crops are not kept for planting seed, we need to store them safely anyway. For we need feed support livestock, poultry, ^nd dairy industries the year around. We can’t feed a whole com crop up when it is harvested. It, along with other things, has to carry us until the crop comes in again. And that calls for storage, safe storage. Yes, bankable storage, for often we have to borrow money against such things, like we do cot ton. And safe storage is the key to that. Drassad Turkay Show The South Carolina Turkey Fed eration is staging its fourth annual dressed turkey show at the State Fair on October 24-26. Our exten sion turkey men, Nesbit and Thax- ton, work with a committee of growers in putting it on. They look for a show this year befitting the rapidly growing turkey business in the state. Vast improvement has been made not only in growing turkeys but in the meat quality of the turkeys produced in recent years. We have some outstanding turkey breeders in the state who are hatching and selling thousands of quality poults to producers in all parts of the state. Since turkeys are the most efficient users of grain that we have, no wonder they are increas ing along with our growing grain industry. Clemson has a good new bulletin on raising turkeys. Zeka, and I had gone down the path about a quarter of a mile to the ancestral home to see them shoot some new fireworks at Christmas tune. They had been brought by some of the kinnery from a far place. We arrived at dusk They said it wasn’t dark enough yet to shoot 'em. Supper was readv. So a cousin, with a voke like a fog horn, hol lered up the valley that we were staying for supper I remember hearing the fain reply. “All right.* and how the call had echoed through the hills. The usual feast that marked ev- Joyed. But good food was not new to us at that season, and our thoughts were on those new fire- After supper it was good dark. Some at the older folks shot the fireworks for us. They didn't trust these new sorts with the kids. One sprayed up like a tree of fire, and It was all wonderful to us. We picked up and treasured the spent After that we played hide amooi the shrubs, chicken coops, buggies wash pots, and the like then around the house. A lantern on tht porch enabled us to see faintly Bu it was all right For folks had good night eyes then.* Wt plyaed until about FX while the grown folks played set beck by s roaring fire there in ths big living room We could see Um sparks roar from the chimney whet they threw on another log 01 pushed the chunks together. Sev eral of the smaller kids got cold and started to whimper. We madt them go inside and warm. But they didn't stay long. We lived rathei scattered through the stone hills and young'uns didn’t get a chanct to play out at night much. I started to tell you about out trip back home.
