Awards Announced. Seventy-two seniors of Clinton high school were awarded diplomas at th* annual graduation exercis es held Monday evening in the school auditorium. The exercises were largely at tended by parents, relatives and friends who gathered for the final chapter of the closing program. Graduates, robed in caps and gowns, occupied seats on the ros- tnrin. Following the processional, the invocation was offered by the Rev. J. W. Spillers. The salutatory address was given by Ruby Jo Darr, followed by a song, “My Task,” by Sue Cooper. The class president’s' address was by John Davis. Helen Phillips played a piano solo, “Polonaise,” by Chopin. A boys quartet snag “The Halls of Ivy.” The valedictory was given by Linda Lou Smith, first honor mem ber of the class. Diplomas were presented by W. R. Anderson, superintendent of city schools, who highly complimented the graduating seniors and gave them helpful parting words of en couragement and admonition. ‘ After the singing of the alma taater, the benediction was pro nounced by the Rev. J. R. Holland. Officers of the graduating class are: John Davis, president; Jimmy Stewart, vice-president; Gene Wilkes, secretary; Mary Ellen Can non, treasurer. The class mascot, little Paula Jones, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Van Jones, pretty and dignified, was seated on the rostrum and was a dose observer of what transpired during the evening. Marshals for the commencement season were: Hoyt Hanvey, Myrtice Rhode* Betty Thomas, Joan Vaugan, Tot Anderson, Joan Bar ron, Thomas Boyce, Kittle Delany, and Trank Young. Brown In Belton Friday Funeral services for Mrs. Lillian Blake Brown, who passed away early last Wednesday morning at the Jo anna hospital after an extended ill ness, were conducted at the grave side in the Belton cemetery Friday morning at 11 o’clock by Bishop Em mett GrJbben, and attended by a large gathering of friends. Mrs. Brown was a native of .Char leston, a daughter of the late Col. Julius A. and Julia Lewis Blake of Charleston, and was a member of 6t. Michael’s Episcopal church. She was the widow of the late W. Carroll Brown of Belton, who passed away in 1937. Mrs. Brown was a resident of Bel ton for 47 years until she moved about two years ago to Joanna to make her home with a daughter, Mrs. J. B. Hart. In addition to Mrs. Hart, the de ceased is survived by another daugh ter, Mrs. Fred W. Shields, of Mt. Ver non, Va.; one son, W. C. Brown, Jr, of Belton; one brother, L. D. Funeral services were conducted Tuesdaiy afternoon from a Waiter- boro funeral home by the Rev. C. K. Douglas. The body was brought here for commitment services held yester day morning (Wednesday) at 11 o’clock at Rosemont cemetery. Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. Maxwell Ferguson. Mr. Ferguson is superintendent of the Cottageville schools. Mrs. Ferguson before marriage was Miss Mercy Winebrenner of Mountville, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Winebrenner. Other survivors include one brother, James Maxwell Ferguson, five years old; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Eva Dean Ferguson of this city; and maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs Winebrenner. Lf. George Copeland To Go Overseas Lt. George Thompson Copeland left Saturday for Fort Benning, Ga, after spending a leave with his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. George Watts Copeland, prior to leaving with the Fourth Division for a European as signment.
