Once one of the commodities high on the scarce list, and long after the war still in volved in a “gray market”, lumber at last is becoming plentiful. Among the poorer grades, prices are drop ping sharply, other grades will follow. From the textile manufacturing centers comes word that inventories are heavy. Goods are piling up in warehouses. White shirts are avail able everywhere. Even food costs have stopped climbing. And so it goes with scores and hundreds of goods and services. Prices are high. Luxuries always have been expensive. But today more people in the aggregate are able to buy more things they want in the United States than ever before in the history of the world. As pro duction continues to grow, prices will have to come down—until wages rise again and push the spiral higher. So what is the use of controls? Ra tioning, allotment, price ceilings in evitably hold back a normal market and eventually chose production into hiding or create back markets. It always happens that way, in the Un ited States as it does anywhere else. Only one service would be per formed by restoration of government controls. That service is strictly po litical.
