The tax reduction issue thereby was thrown into the 1948 presidential campaign. Speaker Martin, Republican, of Massachusetts, announced there will be no other attempt to write tax re ducing legislation in 1947, and he declared: ( “Apparently the Democrats have little interest in cutting expenditures and reducing taxes. We may have to wait until we get a Republican pres ident before we get tax reduction.” The GOP-dominated house voted 268 to 137 to overturn the President’s veto, but this fell two short of the two-thirds majority required. The bill originally’jtessed the house 273 to 137, just one short of a two- thirds majority. The house approved the house-senate compromise bill lat er 220 to 99. Voting to override were 233 Re publicans and 35 Democrats. Stand ing by Mr. Truman were 134 Demo crats, two Republicans—Reps. Carl ! Anderson of Minnesota and Hull of Wisconsin—and the American Labor member,' Rep. Marcantonio of New York. So close was the vote in the tense, strained house that Republican Leader Halleck, of Indiana, demand^ ed a recapitulation. However, the re count confirmed the original tally.
