Charleston, July 12.—The Rev. Dr. Alexander Sprunt, 84, pastor of the First (Scotch) Presbyterian church here 35 years and dean of Charleston clergymen, offered his resignation^as pastor to the church congregation at a meeting following service today. The resignation was accepted on condition that he remain as pastor emeritus. * ‘ Doctor Sprunt will serve as active pastor^until another minister is call- 4dr ln 194 years the church has had only three pastors. A native of Scotland, educated in Wilmington, N. C., Davidson college, and Union Theological seminary, in Virginia, Doctor Sprunt had held pas- tdrates in Virginia and both Carolinas before coming here. In 1923 he served as moderator of the general assembly ! of tho Presbyterian Church in the United States. ^ Tributes to his service were voiced by several leaders in the congregation when he announced that he was seek ing retirement because of advancing age.
