South’s great money crop today $14
to $18 a bale above its value last
March.
Spirited buying by the trade, specu
lators and the public on the New Or-
leans^nd New York markets lifted
futures to new hdgh level* for near
ly two years.
The July position quoted at 9.99
cents a pound on March 18 this year,
changed hands today at New York at
13.40 cents a pound.
Middling spot cotton sold at New^
Orleans • for 13.44 cents. Less than
j four months ago it was 10.55 cent.s.

to have the state .formed into six or
edght districts and have the highway
commission reduced to this number,
and let the people elect the commis
sioners from each district by popular
vote, giving to the governor the pow
er to appoint one of these as chief
of the commission.
“I shall at airtimes uphold, defend,
obey and preserve the constitution of
the State of Sooth. Carolina; and in
addition to the above, promise the
voters of Laurens county that they
will never have cause to regret cast
ing their votes to make me Laurerft

Thirty-five Years.
Charleston, July 12.—The Rev. Dr.
Alexander Sprunt, 84, pastor of the
First (Scotch) Presbyterian church
here 35 years and dean of Charleston
clergymen, offered his resignation^as
pastor to the church congregation at
a meeting following service today.
The resignation was accepted on
condition that he remain as pastor
emeritus. * ‘
Doctor Sprunt will serve as active
pastor^until another minister is call-
4dr ln 194 years the church has had
only three pastors.
A native of Scotland, educated in
Wilmington, N. C., Davidson college,
and Union Theological seminary, in
Virginia, Doctor Sprunt had held pas-
tdrates in Virginia and both Carolinas
before coming here. In 1923 he served
as moderator of the general assembly
! of tho Presbyterian Church in the
United States. ^
Tributes to his service were voiced
by several leaders in the congregation
when he announced that he was seek
ing retirement because of advancing
age. He still appears to be in excel
lent health j^nd spirits. But he said
some of the pastoral were be
coming too arduous..
