At that, there is much stress in a good many different ways, making more active work on the part of the Cham ber of Commerce imperi^ive if the people of the town and th^ town itself are not to suffer seriously under present conditions. “But for the Chamber of Commerce to be efficient, and accomplish for the people all that it ought to accomplish, requires practically universal member ship. “We know that you love your town, and that you stand prepared to do things for it. The biggest thing you tainment, ways and means, and sanitation, moral welfare. “This year each .committee will have a specific program, which it will try to carry out. Specifical ly, your part would lie, first, in get- ing together with us by means of membership in the Chamber of Com merce. The membership committee is given below. One or more of these gentlemen will call on you, and it is the writer’s hope that you will say to them immediately on their asking for your membership, ‘By all means put me down,’ and then let the writer ance that death is not the end. Would a good God plant that assurance in his creatures merely to mock them ? Without immortality the world is an answerless riddle. It is hard for me to believe in a universe thft made itself, and that ruthlessly oasts away its most pre cious possession—human personality. It is easier to believe that behind the universe is a guilding Intelligence, of whose personality my own is a tiny spark that shall not go out while he i lives. If I cannot prove that this is so, neither can any one prove to me'that it is not so.
