Tower of London'b Tragic Past. The Tower of London is a j group of buildings the oldest of i which is the Central White tower, built in the time of William the Conqueror, on the site of j an earlier fortress, dating, according to some authorities, from ' the rule of .Julius Caesar. The j tower, known chiefly for its his- I tory as a prison, was also the | scene of the courts of some of j the earlier kings. The commissioners of York and Mecklenburg counties have taken care of all the preliminaries to letting the contract for the bridge, the cost of which is to be shared by the two counties.
