Tower of London'b Tragic Past.
The Tower of London is a j
group of buildings the oldest of i
which is the Central White
tower, built in the time of William
the Conqueror, on the site of j
an earlier fortress, dating, according
to some authorities, from '
the rule of .Julius Caesar. The j
tower, known chiefly for its his- I
tory as a prison, was also the |
scene of the courts of some of j
the earlier kings. Many distinguished
prisoners have been led i
from one or another of its build,/A

its name from the frequency
with which it was whitewashed.
It is 90 feet high and the
walls are from 12 to In feet
thick. On each of the four turrets
is a weathercock. The Tower
of London is again open to the
public, following the World war.

there, though the associations
of the old place are almost uniformly
tragic.
Sparrows Rout Snake.
A flock of angry Knglish sparrows
attacking and routing a big
black snake- that was Mm una- i
sual sight witnessed the other
day by Robert T. Allison. Weil

near that town.
"My attention was attracted
to the birds," said Mr. Allison,
"bv the racket they were raising

seemed very much wrought up

swooping down on and striking
at angrily. The reptile was inak- I
ing a strategic retreat and soon
disappeared in some nearby
bushes. I was not close enough
to see whether or not it had a
bird in its mouth, but I imagine
it had either just caught one or
had made an unsuccessful effort,
and that the birds were retaliating.
1 can think of nothing else
(barring a drink of York county
moonshine) tlint would embolden
sparrows to attack a snake, their
proverbial enemy."'

between Walter Miller, engineer
for York county, and
Lloyd Ross, engineer for Mecklenburg
county, at which the engineers
planned to open the bids
for the building of the bridge.
The commissioners of York and
Mecklenburg counties have taken
care of all the preliminaries to
letting the contract for the
bridge, the cost of which is to
be shared by the two counties.
Mecklenburg putting up $2 for
every $1 put up by York county.

Alvin A. York of Tennessee,

balance he owed on the property.

payments, but crops failed
and now he may be ejected.
York refused offers from many
theatrical promoters to go on th?

commercialize his patriotism.
