The easiest and beat way to destroy all kinds of weeds is when they are just beginning to appear above" the ground. If weeds aro permitted to grow, however, they make excellent green material for plowing under, bat while they may nearly reach maturity before being thus utilized, under no circumstances must they be permitted to produce seed. If no weeds are al lowed to scatter seeds it wiH be but a few years before the farm is entirely clear of them. It will pay the farmer, however, to keep weeds down by stir- ing the top soil when the weeds are young. The fields are sown into peas, rye and rape, clover and barley and the hogs turned into the rye early in the spring, from thence into the clover field, from the clover to the peas, and from peas to rape, the barley being cut green and fed to the hogs, or the field may be pastured occasionally. The main expense in this system of feeding is in the fences, which must be strong and close. Aside from this the cost wil be less thaa peu feeding.—Atlanta Journal. Much In Little. One of the best ornamental plants for grounds, large or small, is the Incca tilamentosa, which is here illus trated. The genus is commonly known as Spanish bayonet, or Adam’s Needle, and the variety named as the ghost plant. It is entirely hardy and sure to succeed in any soil under the most adverse conditions. It attains a height of five feet or more, with stiff broad, sword-like foliago with thread edges, and is surmounted by tail- branched spikes of large, fragrant, drooping, cup-shaped cream white flowers In June and July. The class is especially desirable as border plants or for planting among shrubbery, while they are exceedingly attractive single specimens or in groups on the lawn. Where one has no boiler for cooking the morning mash for fowls the work can be done very well in such a tub as this. Put in the meal, bran, meat and table scraps, and pour in boiling water, making a thin mixture. Cover tightly with an old woolen blanket and leave over night or several hours, at least. Meal thus cooks very thoronghly and swells up to a dry, crumbly mass.— New York Tribune. Kalalni; Hog* For Baron. A most decided change in the mat ter of taste has developed among the consumers of bacon. The demand now is almost entirely for lean meat, not a single strip of lean, but full one-half. To raise hogs which will supply this demand, peu feeding must be done away with almost entirely. The con finement in close quarters induces fat that even the most careful feeding can not overcome profitably. Unlimited pasture feeding is necessary, and if the right breed o/ hogs is kept bacon can be raised and sold at a profit. It has been found that the rather lazy Berkshire, Poland-China and Jersey breeds cannot be profitably tamed into lean bacon, so that breeds that are inclined to roam, like the crossed Yorkshires or the Tamworth, are the best for the purpose. The Tamworth is but little known in this country, and breeders do not take kindly to the plan of giving up the well-known breeds for this stranger. Attempts are now being made with promise of good results, to educate the razor-hack of the South to feed for bacon. It must be confessed that this animal has many of the characteristics of a good bacon hog, and if the disposition to eat any thing from an old boot to a ground hog can be bred ont of her, she may yet astonish the advocates of fancy breeds. Four one-acre fields well fenced will supply ample pasture for fifty hogs with the addition of some •oots or corn as a snnnlementerv feed. Farm and Garden Notes* Provide shade for the sheep while at pasture. Sheep shonld not be turned to pas ture too early. Gates between the fields are much better than bars. Try one and prove this statement. Keep the houses dry and clean and you will prevent half the sickness among your fowls. A brood sow on a pasture from now till fall will not need much grain to raise a fine litter of pigs. Eggs a month old will hatch if kept in an even temperature and tamed half over every day or two. A little lard rubbed under the wings and on top of mother hen’s head will free the chicks of lice. Com is not an egg food;it should not be fed exclusively, only in very cold weather, and then as a night feed. Clean out the nests and burn the old nest material and kerosene them inside before putting in the elean straw or hay. A few sheep well cared for will pay a nice profit on their keep, while k large flock neglected will make the owner out of pocket. One of the most successful poultry- men of America grinds two bushels of oats with one of corn, and with 200 pounds of this mixes 100 pounds o^ bran for the month’s mash. It does not pay to breed from fowls which have been affected with roup or other diseases which sap the vitality from their systems. The young stock from such matings are almost certain to show some trace of the disease. If you pen your pigs keep the pens clean and let the pigs have a variety of food with green stuff a large part of it. Cut rye ns soon as ready, then oats or clover, which ever you have come on first, then cow peas, or green com, and thus bring them to fall with but little expense for grain. Finish off with com and you will have good sweet pork at a moderate cost. A Banquet In a Morgue. The doctors of Melbourne,' Aus tralia, gave a dinner to the city Cor oner recently, and by way of a joke decided to make the ; morgue the ban quet-room. There are several varieties that are use! for food, of which the bullfrog Is the kind most sought. The common, ar green, frog and the shad, or leopilrd, frog are prized next In order. The pickerel frog and marsh frog aro not used for food, the meat havlug a dis agreeable odor.
