In another column is announced the dissolution of the firm of Darr & Brunson, publishers of The Flor ence Daily Times and The Times. Messenger. The undersigned has associated with him Mr. W. A. Brunson and the business will be continued by him and the said un dersigned under the firm name of Brunson and Brunson. I cordially thank every man, woman and child who has given patronage to the papers, and have only to say that it shall be our ob ject to keep them to the front and worthy the support of the people. It has been stated here and there since the publication of the letter alleged to have been written by Garcia to General Shafter, that it was the work of some newspaper correspondent. And from W ash- ington correspondents we learn that it has given the cabinet con siderable concern. If the letter was a foigery and a libel, why does it not come to light under some official declara tion ? The silence of Gen. Shafter does not prove that the letter is not genuine, and after so long time the President must be advisee of the facts. The fact of dissatisfaction in the Cuban camp and among Cuban citizens appears to be confirmed from other sources. It would not be right to con demn Gen. Shafter without know, ing the facts, but, if it be true that Gen. Garcia’s presence was ignor ed at the time of the Spanish sur render, it was a plain breach of courtesy—and, considering his re lations to the country, it was more. The war was begun on a high plane. Free Cuba was the cry from press and people and no in terference further than to aid the Cubans in securing their rights. Now forgetting the solemn pledges of the country, press and people are crying “Annexation,” “the Cubans are incapable of self, government,” “the United States must take in all conquered terri tory.” It may be that the Cubans are not capable of self govern ment, but they have never had trial.
