The war has introduced to the news paper readers of the laud a host of unfamiliar words—the names of Cuban towns and Spanish naval vessels. The meaning and pronunciation of some of them are already familiar, but in order that the casual reader may bet ter understand that which he reads herewith is presented the mean ing of a number of the Spanish words oftenest found in the dispatches. As to the pronunciation of Spanish words the following general rules apply: Every letter in the Spanish lan guage is given its fall value. There are no silent letters. The double 1 is given a liquid, slur ring sonnd. For instance, the word Callao is pronounced Kah-yah-o. Cas- tellar is pronounced Cas tay-yar. The letter a takes the broad pro nunciation as in far; e takes the sound of the English long a; i is pronounced like the English e, as is, also y; o is long; u is pronounced oo as in booth. Ch is sounded as in the English word church. Following is a short dictionary of Spanish words and phrases for news paper readers: Alameda—A grove of trees. Aim iran te—Admiral. Ariete—A battering ram. Armada—Fleet. Arroyo—A small river. Audaz—Bold, audacious. Azor—Goshawk, a bird. Bahia Honda—Deep bay. Banco—Bauk. Btindo—Proclamation, Benitn—A Benedictine nun. Blanco—White. Coufusiou in reading the war news frequently comes from ignorance as to the exact meaning of terms employed. Here are come points which will help to clear matters up: The relative Tanks of the army and navy are as follows: Army—General or commander-in* chief, lieutenant general, major gen eral, colonel, lieutenant colonel, major, captain, first lieutenant, second lieu tenant. Navy—Admiral, vice admiral, rear admiral, commodore, captain, commander, lieutenant commander, lieutenant, master, ensign. The Pres ident, of course, is commander-in chief of the army and naval forces of the country. Here are the divisions of the army: Squad, a sub-division of a company, commanded by a sergeant or corporal; platoon, half a company, commanded by a lieutenant; company, not more than 100 men, commanded by a captain; battalion, four compa nies, commanded by a major; regiment, commanded by a colonel; brigade, two or more regiments, commanded by brigadier genera); division, two or more brigades, commanded by a ma- jor general; corps, two or more divis ions, commanded by a lieutenant gen eral. The diviaions of the navy most important in this war are: Sqnadron, a detachment of a fleet employed on any particular service; flotilla, a fleet of small vessels; fleet, a large number of vessels under one commander. A regiment of artillery consists of twelve batteries of six guns each, and a reg iment of cavalry is composed of twelve troops, two or more of which form a squadron. Drops of Air. It is not an uncommon sight in a laboratory whore experiments with liquefied air are being condnoted to see drops of air fulling on a lecture table and ranning about exactly like drops of water on a hot stove. In fact, the table may be called as “red hot’ in comparison with the temperature of the liquefied oxygen and nitrogen, of which the drops consist. A Startled Mather. From, the Freeport (IU.)
