Blackenstein what made him so thoughtful. “Madam,” he replied, “I am wonder- tng how It Is you can make the piano talk so divinely and yourself so fool ishly.” “Ah, wefl,” retorted Mrs. M.. “you see : the piano knows it has me to listen to It, whereas I km/w I have only you to lis ten to me, whdeh makes the difference.” “I pray you,” said the professor, ‘‘play again. I like your playing best.” A contemporary asks “Whom are missing?” Without attempting to an swer this question we will wager that the list includes Llndley Murray. ton, ami the continued drought and the ! frequent hot uorthers have ruined tho ’ prospects for feed in the future. Cat tle and sheep meu are hustling their stock out of the country as fast as tho railroads can carry it. They have tried to get permission from the Gov ernment to pasture it this summer ou the Government reservations, but could only get permission to drive it across them. They have applied to Nevada for help, and Nevada has re plied that she has no more than sue needs for her own stock, but has fin ally decided that stock may be shipped across the State. The cattle quarantine against tho southern part of the State has been sufficiently modified to permit the re moval of stock from the dronght- strickeu sections, and the overland roads have consented to make half rates for stock sent East for pastur age. The authorities of Utah, Ne braska and Wyoming have agreed to allow shipments into their territory of stock that has been properly inspected. The value of the imperiled stock is in the neighborhood of $2,000,000, Many buyers from Utah, New Mexico, Nevada, Texas and Northern Califor nia are visiting the drought-stricken districts and picking up bargains. One herd of 5000 head of cattle, re quiring fifteen trains of eighteen cars each has already been shipped East, and the railroad authorities made arrangements to send out at once sixty trains of eighteen oars, each of which will carry about 20,000 head of cattle to points east of Nevada. In all not less than 100,000 head will be sent out of the State. One big shipment of 18,500 sheep is on its way East in five trains of thirty-seven cars each. Another shipment of 15,000 sheep has been sold in Chicago and is on its way there. Nearly 100,000 sheep will probably he sent East during the next month. Cattle and sheep cars are be ing collected and hurried here from all parts of the West. One firm, which controls large tracts of pasture land, is shipping 22,000 head of sheep to New Mexico and is sending droves of cattle to Northern California and to Texas. A member of this firm said: “We shall not leave a hoof on our ranch. Everything, cattle, sheep and jhorses, has got to go. There is no feed for the stock.” Those having large bands of horses will suffer heavily, as the animals are not sufficiently valuable to warrant much effort in saving them. A good many raisers of hogs are buying up all the horses they can get at from $1 to $2.50 per head for hog feed. The horse is taken to the field, killed, its hide stripped off, and its carcass left to the hogs, which soon leave nothing but a pile of bones. One hog dealer Gewnty has bought 2ot neaabf horses which he will use solely for hog feed. Several firms are buying up horses for the manu facture of fertilizers. A few who own blooded stock are sending it oat of the country for pasturage. A LIVING WITNESS. Mrs. Hoffman Describes How She Wrote to Mrs. Pinkham for Advice, and Is Now Well - Dear Mbs. I have been sick for months, was troubled with severe pain in both sides of abdomen, sore feeling in lower part of bow els, also suffered with dizziness, headache, and could not sleep. I wrote you a letter describ ing my case and asking your advice. You replied tell- " ing me just what to do. I followed your direc tions, and cannot praise your medicine enough for what it has done for me. Many thanks to you for yonr advice. Lydia E. The condition described by Mrs. Hoff man will appeal to many women, yet lots of sick women struggle on with their daily tasks disregarding the urgent warnings until overtaken by actual collapse. The present Mrs. Pinkhsm’s experi ence In treating female ills is unparal leled, for years she worked side by side with Mrs. Lydia E. A new industry has opened in Cali fornia in the working of crystal mines. The Green mountain crystal mine, near Calaveras, has turned out a large number of beautiful specimens which have been bought up by the largest jewelry firm in New York. Tho consignment is said to represent more great crystals than have hereto fore been discovered in the history of the world. No crystal balls have ever been made until recently outside of Japan, but the New York firm has perfected methods by which they can execute balls and other design* in crystal and can do more work in a ten- hour day than the Japs can do in that many weeks. A more extensive exploration of the ancient river channels from which the crystals have been taken will, it is thought, result in the discovery of the cavern or great ledge crevice where they are formed and where the stray specimens rolled down the sides of the river banks and lodged ages ago. If this source can be revealed it is certain that finer ones than any yet found will be secured—crystals that will he free from cfacks and flaws and as pare as distilled water petrified. In the meantime California holds the world’s record for size, the weight of the greatest crystal so far taken from the Calaveras mines being 2290 pounds.—Washington Pori. Spain It has been a source o< great profit continually for 1587 years. Ponce dc Leon is the larger city, having about 35,000 inhabitants, and lying in the midst of the sugar district. San Juan has about 25,000 population, and its great advantage is a commodious and protected harbor. The city lies upon an island connected with the mainland by a bridge and a causeway. The streets are narrow, the houses arc low, mostly of a single story, and are built in the old-fashioned Spanish style, with thick walls around the courtyard. The fronts are ugly and are painted all sorts of brilliant colors, pink, blue, purple and yellow. They wear heavy shutters in the windows for protection, but there is not a pane of glass or a chimney in the rown. Be hind the gloomy walls ar. glorious gar dens and patios, with splashing foun tains shaded by that most beautiful of all trees, the royal palm, whose plumes nod in the breeze ike thoie of bird of paradise. There is a cathed ral. a theater, a city hall, the Gov ernor General’s palace, and several notable churches, and in the center is park covering about the same area as one of our city squares, with con crete walks lined with seats and state ly palms, but not a spear of turf. Around this park the market women ather every morning, selling poultry, eggs, vegetables and flowers, and in the evening it is filled with the high er classes of the population, listening to the music of a military band. The young women are beautiful, particular ly those of mixed blood, but they con ceal their attractions so far as possible by the excessive use of face powder, which makes them look as if they plunged their heads into a flour bar rel.—ChicagoRecord^ A Naval Hero’* Story. From Ou' Times-Herald, Chicago, IU. Late In 1861, when President Lincoln Is-, sued a call for volunteers, L. 3. Clark, of Warren, Trumbull Co., Ohio, was among the first to respond. He joined the mortar fleet of Admiral Porter just before the me morable operations on the Mississippi River began. It was at the terrific bombardment of *5e Tleksburg forts, that the hero of this story fell with a shattered arm from a charge of sohrapnel. After painful months in the hospital, ho recovered sufficiently to be sent to hts hoipe at Warren, Ohio. Another call for troops fired his patriotic zeal aad Clark soon en listed in Company H, of the 7th Ohio Vol unteers. In the army of the Potomac, he was In many engagements. He finally recovered sufficiently to be out but was a mere shadow, weighing oi\ly 90 pounds. The best medical attendance failed to restore his lost strength asd vigor. “A friend gave me a box of Dr. Williams’ Pink Pills for Pale People,” said Dr. Clark, “and they helped me so much that I bought a half dozen boxes and took them. I soon regained my strength, now weigh 190 pounds and, except for Injuries that can never be remedied, am as well as ever. “I consider Dr. Williams’ Pink Pills for Pale People the best remedy to build up a run down system, and heartily recommend them to everyone in heed of such aid.” The Lord’* Prayer in a Dot. A machine has been invented which is composed of most exquisitely grad uated wheels rubbing a tiny diamond point at the end of an almost equally tiny arm, whereby one is able to write, upon glass, the whole of the Lord’s prayer within a space which measures the 294th part of an inch in length by the 440th part of an inch in breadth, .or abont the measurement of the dot over a letter “i” in common print. With this machine anyone who under stood operating it could write the whole 3,567,480 letters of the Bible eight times over in the space of an inch—a square inch. A specimen of this marvelous microscopic writing was enlarged by photography and every letter and point was perfect and oonld be read with ease.—Saturday Evening Post. Teachers Clab Together. Russia holds the third place among gold-producing countries. Gold is only found in large quantity in the Ural mountains and east and west Siberia; the very limited output of washed gold In Finland is not of any importance. It is only natural that the Russian government should do all in its power to advance the gold-mining Industry. Its plan is to train up a staff of mining engineers, and to let these experts visit North America, south Africa and Aus tralia. It is also proposed to attempt a second extraction of gold from some of the vast quantities of residue, etc. In the various mining districts.—Phila- dalikhia Rtvnivl »» « o o wppflnnnf 0 rrerirrgTinni amry g ytnnnnnraTYTrini m vyiM JV SlUv ’A. w i . § <0 There’s nothing in Ivory Soap but soap, good, pure vegetable oil soap.
