Key West, May 23—3.20 p. m.— The British steamer Ardmore in trying to run the Cuban blockade this morning was captured by the Osceola and brought to Key West as a prize. MAV REACH HAVANA THIS WEEK. Washington, May 23—3.20 p. m.—Military experts in Washing ton expect that the American troops will *be in Havana this week. It is believed that some have already started. ’twould not take long. It is known that the government could transport 25,000 men from Tkmpa in 36 hours, keeping them north of the fleets of Sampson, Schley and Cervera. n shall not. Key West, Fla., May 22, 6.30 p. m.—The tranquility of a tropical Sunday has been undisturbed by defiuite news from any quarter. There are only one or two ships in the harbor, and they are coaling with all haste to get away to join their fellows in an action which ail are convinced is only a matter of a few days, perhaps hours. Speculation is still concentrated on the whe r eabouts of Admiral Cervera's t-quadron, the general opinion favoring some point on the southern coast. As both sides of the island are now pat rolled by United States warships, the naval authorities will not ad mit the possibility of Cervera’s es cape without the most desperate conflict in the history of naval warfare. Reports from Admiral Samp son’s squadron say that all is quiet, off the northern coast of Cuba. Nothing from Commodore Schley is expected before Monday or Tues day. Santiago de Cuba, had been driven off by the Spanish fleet, but the story is generally discredited. Where it came from is a mystery. . BOUND FOS M AN ILA. San Francisco, May 22—The Charleston is well on hsr vay to Manila. The big cruiser passed through the Golden Gate at 8:20 this morning, after having been anchored in the stream all night- She adjusted her compass at an early hour and then passed up the bay through Raccoon straits and passed the docks on the northern frontage of the city. Every steam vessel in the harbor blew au revcir to Capt. Glass and his crew. None of the forts in the harbor saluted the vessel, but the demonstration made bv the 6,000 soldiers gather ed at the Presidio was tremendous. When the vessel was sighted com ing down the bay the soldiers gathered on the beach to bid her bon voyage. They lined the beach for a mile, and cheer upon cheer rang from the men who are to soon follow the Charleston to the sceueof Admiral Dewey’s triumph. The Charleston's big siren an swered the boys on the beach time and again, and the whistling was heard from one end of the city to the other. His ser mon was clear anil thoughtful and those who heard nim left the church much pleased. There was no ser vice at night. Rev. W. B. Oliver of Wilmington preached at the iUptist church at both the morning and evening ser vice. Mr. Oliver is it strong preacher and his reinarkt-y^sterday made a profound im] At the Mejj cniidren. P^slightful was spent with Che young folks. The recitations were all good, and the sinking was bright and spirited Rev. Walter I. Herbert made a short address and much interest ing information about Methodism was brought out in a series of ques tions and answers. At night Rev. A. H. McArn preached a fine sermon to ^ large congregation. Rev. R. W. Barnwell preached at St. John’s Episcopal church in the morning and at 6 o’clock in the afternoon. The sermons were characteristically strong. Rev. Yancey Von A. Riser preached to the Lutheran congre gation, delivering two earnest and thoughtful discourses.
