The rendezvous of the White Squadron at the so-called Dry Tortu- gas, says the Detroit Free Press, brings this singular place into greater prominence than it has had for a quarter of a century. From 1860 to 1866 the key and fort formed an im portant station—the key of the gulf— a coaling and supply station for the famous Bouquet fleet and onr cruisers, which belonged to the gulf squadron. The word Tortugas means turtle, and refers to these animals which frequent the keys in May to deposit their eggs. The name applies to a group of low-keys, which rest on the water like emeralds on a sea of azure, formed by the pure white coral sand. The keys are nine in number, and are called Garden key—on which is situated the great Fort Jefierson— Bush, Bird, Middle, Long, Northwest, Sand, Loggerhead and East. Logger- head key is long aud slender and bears the lighthouse —one of the loftiest in the United States. Sand key is to the north, on a line with East and Middle keys. During the war it had a battery and was the smallpox station. East key is famous for the Spanish gold laden galleon which was wiecked here in the eighteenth century. The light house keeper at Garden key found, it is said, $20,000 in gold. In the center of this great reef, which represents possibly thirty square miles, lies Garden key aud Fort Jefferson, surrounded by a harbor as perfect as can be imagined. Garden key was well chosen as the foundation of the fort, as it is like a spider in the center of a web, into and about which the narrow yet deep channel winds— so narrow, that in all probability none bat the smallest of the fleet will venture in, though during the war, fairly large transports came up to the little wharf. To the east of the fort, beyond the blue- ribbon-like harbor, lies a white sandy lagoon, once ‘partly covered with coral, and on its extreme edge the sea beats fiercely. To the south, the great lagoon stretches away, while to the west there is a ship channel with intervening reefs of greater or less depth. To the north, the condi tions ar« similar, with three large keys —Sand, Middle and East and their aurrounding reefs. It was th/ original plan in 1847, when Fort LJefferson was begun, to place on of the surrounding islands a sWd battery, thus making the outlying islands a part of the plans of defense, but this- was never completed. The fort, named after Thomas Jef ferson, gradually took form, and is one of the remarkable structures of masonry in this country, being of brick, and a half a mile around, in closing thirteen acres, and having three tiers of guns, numbering in all over five hundred. The fort was surrounded by a ditch or moat, and this again by a sea wall, so that the fort virtually rose out of the water, having upon the outside hardly more thau an acre of made which afforded room for carpenter shop, the masons were set to work laying brick to complete the fort, the* laborers to hauling sand, while Urge numbers were employed in attending to police dnty and in clean ing the garrison; the 4 druggists and doctors went into the hospitals as nurses, the cooks to the mess hall. And so great was the surplus that the officers took many for cooks and ser vants as a matter of good policy. The writer’s family had two of these men. One, who had been a chef in New York, had gone into the bounty- jumping business and had retired to the Dry Tortugas. The other said that he had been ordered to retreat at Bnll Bun, and as he did not stop until he reached Vermont he was ar rested as a deserter. These were their stories. They were faithful ser vants. The Dry Tortngas was originally, with its incomparable harbor for medium-sized craft, the rendezvous for the pirates, who swept the Spanish main during the past century. The writer discovered nn old cannon, bear ing the arms of Spain, on the reef near Bird Key, in water about ten feet deep, and some distance from the chanuel, showing that it must have been on its way to the key in a small boat, and was probably lost overboard. The islands have also had iu years gone by an unsavory record as the headquarters for wreckers. Vitality of the* Wild Goose. Farmer H. N. Clement, of Lowell, Lake County. Indiana, was gunning in the Kankakee Marsh. He came upon a flock of wild geese and bagged several of them, one of which aston ished him by having as a breastpin au arrow nine inches long. That goose became the wonder of the neighbor hood and the study of scientists, the only conclusion reached being that, wherever the Avild bird came from, there it got the arrow, so unique iu formation that it could be assigned to no tribe of Indians in the United States or any other known country. Finally Professor O. T. Mason, of the Natural Museum, said the bird and arrow coaid have come from no other place on the globe than the Yukon Valley, for except in that region no such arrows are made. Science does not pretend to say how long the goose had carried the arrow of a Yukon tribesman until it met its death from the shot of a civilized gunner down on an Indiana marsh. The bird disdained the weapon of a savage, but turned up its legs to the marksman ship of the Hoosier farmer years afterward, and thousands of miles away from its summer home in Arctic desolation, as it was journeying south ward.—Cincinnati Enquirer. Eagle Caught at Sea. A most remarkable incident occurred during the passage from Turks island to Providence of the Boston brig Mary Gibbs, in the capture by the crew of a large eagle hundreds of miles from land. Captain Coombs stated that his vessel passed between two terrific hur ricanes on the passage up the coast. When the vessel was 850 miles to the southeast of Cape Hatterasa large bird was seen flying, or rather being borne by the wind directly toward the brig. A man was sent out on the jibboom to capture it, and the bird, which proved to be a large eagle, flew into the man’s arms aud was easily cap tured. It seemed completely exhaus- land which afforded room for the j ted by its long flight, and for some quarantine wharf and several build- I days it was unable to stand. During ings formerly used by the engineer ; this time the crew fed and cared for it, corps. When the war broke out the fort was well on toward completion. The walls were up and the process of filling up with concrete and coral taken from the reef was under way; but there were no guns, and it was some time before the fort was even fairly well equipped. The fort to-day is, literally, a hol low mockery. One shot from any one of the white cruisers would, in all probability, crush in an entire case mate. It is a splendid monument by contrast of the advancement of tnili- tary science, a type of obsolete methods, now of value only as a shell which might be covered with bags of sand or concrete of the dead coral rock of which the great reef affords an abundant supply. As the war progressed it became the famous Dry Tortugas prison, where bounty jumpers, deserters and war time criminals of all kinds were sent. The most notable were the conspira tors Spangler, Mudd, McLaughlan and others, sent in some instances for life, but all finally pardoned out under reconstruction. At one time there were about 1000 prisoners and 1500 troops on this sandbank of thirteen acres. In 1864 almost every month a transport ar rived with prisoners—as motley a crowd as one could wish to see, some in old uniforms, some in citizens’ clothes, some in rags, unwashed, vermin-covered; despair and criminal ity written on many faces, while here and there were refined-looking, de spairing men, who had been unjustly sentenced to the great prison. The prisoners were marched up into the fort, arranged as on dress parade and the roll called. Borne were missing, had died en route and were buried in the Gulf Stream; others were sick. When each man answered to his name his trade was asked and he was detailed to congen ial woik. The carpenters went to the and the result is that the eagle now is very tame. Captain Coombs thinks the eagle was caught in the terrific hurricane and carried from its natural haunts to the spot where the crew of the brig captured it. The bird meas ures six feet Aom tip to tip of its wiu^s. The plumage on its breast is white while the back is mottled.—Boston Journal. Rapid Writing. A rapid penman can write thirty words in a minute. To do this he must draw his quill through the space of a rod—sixteen aud one-half feet. In forty minutes his pen travels a fur long, and in five hours and a third a mile. We make on an average sixteen curves of the peu in writing each word; writing thirty words in a minute we must make 488 to each second; in an hour 28,800; in a day of only five hours 144,000, aud in a year of 300 days, 43,200,000. The man who made 1,000,000 strokes with a pen in a month was not at all remarkable. Many men make 4,000,000. Here we have in the aggregate a maak 300 miles long, to be traced on paper by each writer in the year. In making each letter of the alphabet we must make from three to seven strokes of the pen—on an average three and one- half to four. Millionaire Witli a Small Bank Account. The inventory and appraisement of the estate of Adolph Sutro—made necessary by bis mind becoming affec ted—presents many facts of interest. What will impress most people as pecu liar is the small amount of ready money. Though the entire estate is valued at three millions of dollars, the money in bank amounted to only $473.50, and the entire personal prop erty *to $553,908. The outside prop erty is placed at $38,500, leaving $2,- 157,164 as the value of his San Fran cisco real estate.—Sau Francisco Ar gonaut. POPULAR SCIENCE. More than 300,000 series of are lamps are in use in this country now. In Biel afield, Germany, there is a colony of epileptics, numbering about 1500. The colony was established in 1868, and patients from all parts of the world go there for treatment. Large fish can be killed or stunned to prevent trouble in getting them into the boat by nsing a new spring pistol, whioh has a chisel shaped point, to be released by a trigger, and shot out by the spring to sevar the backbone of the fish. That a caterpillar secretes wax to line its cell is a known fact. It now appears that a geometrid moth covers its eggs with silk. It is contained in a poach at the end of the abdomen in the form of dense bandies about two mm. long, aud resembling in miuiatnre locks of wavy flaxen hair. Projectiles used for the United Btales Army for its gi^at modern guns cost as follows: Solid shot, 8-inch, $69.80 each; 10-inch, $144.50 each; 12-inch, $212 each; 12-inch mortar shells, weighing 800 pounds, $114 each, and 12-inch mortar shells, weigh ing 1000 pounds, $195 each. Victims of “rose fever,” “hay fever” and “ragweed fever” will be interested to learn that a German doc tor has added “bean fever” to the list of these popular summer epidemics. His discovery has been christened “Favismus,” and the cure for the dis ease is to beware of bean fields. A German paper maker has recently obtained letters patent on bottles made of paper, for use on board ship. The new bottles are made of a compo sition which, with the solution iu which they are made water-tight, is still the inventor’s secret. After be ing impregnated with this fluid the paper bottles are slowly dried in gas stoves. A doctor in Paris has made the dis covery that a solution of one part pic ric acid to seventy-five parts of water will cure quickly the most serious burns. The pain of the most terrible burns is instantly removed without blistering or irritation, and healing takes place in four or five days. There is left a yellow tint on the skin, which can be removed by a solution of boric acid. The collector of butterflies may not know that specimens' are sometimes made up of two or three different species, and even ordinary insects are often dyed and made to appear as jf they had been native to the tropical Iforests. The collectors of butterflies {are also orchid hunters, the flowers and insects that so closely resemble ieach other being alike denizens of dangerous and inaccessible jungles. CalllDK Wild Fowl. The difference between the notes of invitation made by various shore fowl —stints, gray plover, golden plover ringed plover, knots and sandpipers —is so slight that no one but a fowler would notice them. Yet to these the difference is as great as that be tween the sound of French and Eng lish. A realty first-class gnnner will sit in a creek in August and call the birds up, if within hearing aud in clined to move, in any order you like to name. Even such closely allied birds as the curlew and the whimbrel have different notes. We once saw a large mixed flock of gray plover, knots and stints flying past on the muds, at a distance of some ninety yards. A gnnner noticed that there were two or three golden plover among them. The gunner whistled the golden plover’s note, and from the big flock of some sixty birds the pair instantly flew out, wheeled and passed within fifty yards, answering the call in their own language. Perhaps the best instance of the aptness of the gunners in learning bird language was recently recorded in the West minster Gazette. It is credited to a fowler yrho shot the only specimen of the broad-billed sandpiper ever killed in Norfolk. When down on the muds listening to the notes of the shore birds he distinguished one which he did not know. He imitated it, the bird answered, flew up to him and was shot. Starlings, which seem al-i most to talk and certainly can imi tate other birds when engaged in their carious “song,” which seems so like a conversational variety entertainment, arc all the time enjoying a monologue. Starlings, when they have anything to say, as when nesting, or quarreling for places when going to roost, use quite different notes. Of all bird voices the song of the swallow is most like human speech—not our speech, but like the songs which the Lapp or such outlandish races sing. A Lapp woman sings a song just like that of a swallow at dawn. —Washington Star. German Army Cyrle Corps. Many suggestions have been made to the war department at Washington for the utilization of the old smooth bore twelve-pounder Napoleon gnus that the army still has on hand as relics of former wars. The depart ment has been severely censured, in deed, for not using these old guns for tiring shrapnel, and several papers have gone so far as to assert that shrapnel cannot be used in the modern rifled caunon. An official who is a recognized authority on projectiles and guns said that these suggestions aud criticisms are founded on ignor ance of the nature of the shrapnel and the modern rifled gun, as used iu the armies of all civilized nations. The old twelve-pounder Napoleon, said he, is a smoothbore, obsolete gun, which was considered antiquated even in our late war. It bears about the same relation to the fleld gun of the present day tlvat the old scythe does to the modern mowing machine. The shrapnel used iu the old field gun, he said, was know n in the service as “spherical case shot.” It consisted of a spherical shell filled with bullets, but these bullets are now assembled in circular layers, and are held in place by separators, which are short cast-iron cylinders, w ith hemispheri cal cavities, into which the bullets fit. These separators are weakened by radical cuts, and increase the effect of the shrapnel by furnishing additional fragments of effective weight. The total number of bullets and different pieces iu the modern shrapnel is 201. As to the rangb of the old and mod ern shrapnel, this official said that the twelve pounder Napoleon carried its old-fashioned shrapnel only a trifle over 1500 yards. The present shrap nel, firing from a rifled gun, is effec tive at 3800 yards, or two and a half times ns far. It could be used much further than this if a clear view of the object of tire could be obtained. The object against which this projectile is to be exploded must be seen clearly and i*8 distance calculated to a nicety, sothat the fuse may be properly adjust ed and timed. The shrapuel is called by artillery experts “the mau-killing projectile.” It has replaced shell in the field artillery, and is practically the only projectile used by the modern field guns of the armies of this country aud of Europe. It is ten to twenty times as destructive as shell against troops. In the late war it was used to good purpose at Malvern Hill and Gettys burg, aud also by the British in their Indian and Egyptian campaigns. The only objection that can be advanced Igainst it is that the range and view must be accurately determined. When these are ascertained, the shrapnel will pulverize any object it is used upon. “Sedan,” said this official, “was the greatest artillery battle that has yet been fought. Every attempt of the French to advance against the German guns was checked by the shell fire of the German batteries at a distance of 2000 paces. The French general, Donay, declared that the French were beaten by the artillery tire alone. This was with shell. The effectiveness of shrapnel may be imagined when we remember that it is at least ten to twenty times as destructive as shell under the same conditions.”—New York Times. I thought a beef tongue was about the same size as my ow n tongue. But I wasn’t go ing to admit to that man that I didn’t know’ anything about housekeeping. I wouldn’t even ask him how much the three tongues would cost. I’ll buy them tomorrow, if it bankrupts us, aud then I’ll never trade with that impertinent man again.”—Buffalo Express. X«w York Pin Eater*. Nearly four times as many pies are consumed in Greater New York in a year as in Chicago. Apropos of that fact, simply by way of comparison, I clip this interesting paragraph from a Chicago contemporary: “Chicago peo ple eat 118 acres of pie in a year. Put side by side these pies would make a sidewalk down the 1075 miles of Chicago’s paved streets and leave 625 miles of pies for the improved streets.
