If a mask of thin muslin, dipped in buttermilk frequently, is worn for a day immediately after the freckles make their appearance, all trace of them will vanish. Holes for the mouth aud eyes must be cut in the mask. An Ancient Rule Abrogated. The announcement that the 10 o’clock retiring rule has been rescind ed by the management of Vassar Col lege will be pleasant news to all peo ple of common sense. It is a relic of the ancient time when there were no decent lights or lamps for night study and also when everybody went to bed early in order to get up before the dawn. The world has progressed so far that a person can study more safely by a good study lamp than by the light of day. In regard to early rising there is now no doubt that it is an objectionable habit. The air of the early morning is not good until it has been warmed and purified by the sun. The ohemical quality of sun light starts every living green thing to work attacking the impurities in the atmosphere and also breaks up many of the latter directly.—New York Mail and Express. The High Hat in Boston. The ladies of Boston have protested against thlp ordinance which forbids them to wear hats in the theatre on the ground that sitting without any head covering at all subjects them to liability to catch cold. They desire to have the law amended so as to permit them to wear small hats, which, they declare, will not interfere with the Hue of sight of any person. No doubt these ladies mean well, but as usual they are illogical. Let the ordinance be amended so as to make it compulsory for the ladies to wear bonnets or hats of small size when ever they go to any place of amuse ment. That will settle the catching cold question. Not even a Boston woman will consent to wear a bonnet or a hat in her opera box. But if she does not need it there she does not need it anywhere—except for looks. And where is the man who does not know what a nuisance is the small evening headdress, with its ceaseless ly bobbing feather?—New York Times. The Bachelor Girl. “She is wise in one respect, is this bachelor girl,” Buth Ashmore writes in the Ladies’ Home Journal. “She has learned the art of gathering years gracefully. She appreciates, as she loses her youth, that she must pay more regard to her appearance, and that in life’s picture she must always be a figure that looks well. Here the bachelor girl rises superior to the old maid, for with ail the old maid’s gen tleness she wai a bit inclined toward dowdiness. The bachelor girl im presses you, when you meet her, with her naturalness. Perhaps, as you grow to know her well, you may wish that her natural manner did not tend toward brusquencss; but at least she is truthful. She is a woman of busi ness, and she is gradually learning that to succeed, alike in business and in society, she must follow the exam ple of her brother and not carry her workaday worries or joys into -her so cial life. She mast learn the art of being a grub or a butterfly as time and place demand. She is fond of pleas ure, aud being healthy and happy she is kind and charitable.” Alaskan Indian Women. Writing of the “Indian Women of Alaska and Their Handiwork,” in the Woman’s Home Oompanion, Olive McGregor says: “The huge expres sionless face of an Alaska Indian woman shows but little evidence of any ambition or ability to perform even the simplest features of domestic art, and yet the skillful aud artistic results of the haudiwork of these un tutored aborigines is much sought af ter by tourists who visit their villages during the summer. Moreover, though the women are all fat and I&zy-looking, their lives are not unin terrupted ease, notwithstanding that their needs are few. Abundance of fuel is all about them, and food, which with them is synonymous with fish, swims almost to their doors. But the procuring as well as the prepuing of this food is all accomplished by the women. During the summer they Iqave the villages and towns for the islands in less frequented waters, where they camp for weeks at a time, catching and curing the fish for winter use, while the men lazily watch them, or paddle the canoe, or otherwise amuse themselves. “If an Indian’s wife is in ill health or too old to work, he marries anoth er younger wife, usually a* relative of the first one, who is expected to pro vide the food, while the first wife cares for the house and children. Fish and berries furnishing almost the only food of these people, the woifien have little scope or ambition for developing culinary art, but iu matters of personal adornment they take keen delight. During the long, dark winter they weave beautiful blankets and baskets for theft own use and to sell. The blankets are made from the strong rough wool of the wild mountain sheep. Yet some of these are as soft as silk, aud in beauty of coloring and intricacy of de sign rival the Oriental rugs and bang ings. It usually takes a woman six months to complete one blanket, but many of them sell for prices ranging from fifty to two hundred dollars. The much-sought-after, genuine Chil- kat blanket is about four feet lor g and two and one half feet wide at each end, but as one side is pointed, the center is a foot wider than the ends, and on this side is ornamented with a ten-inch fringe. These are worn in the dance, thrown around the shoul ders, with the pointed fringe side hanging down. The design is gro tesque, consisting of conventional ized faces of men and animals in pale green, outlined with black on a white ground. Sometimes dull blue tak the place of the pale green. A. culiarity which stamps their ge: ness is a fine thread or shaving’ 1 , deerskin in the center of each h twisted strand of wild sheep’s woo yarn, of which they are made, render ing them almost indestructible.” Japanese Indoor Games. The indoor sports and amusements for evenings at home are mainly card- games and story-telling. The father tells his sons the tales of the mighty heroes of the past ages, relates Japan ese history, aud teaches reverence and obedience to the Mikado, the “heaven-appointed ruler;” or the grandmother gathering the little ones in a circle around the brazier filled with hot coals, tells them the wonder ful fox-stories, the stories of demons and gnomes, and the clever fables about animals. Their giVme of gomau is like our checkers, but it requires three hun dred and sixty pieces, instead of twenty-four. It is played on a raised stand. In the game of chess they have forty pieces. There are several ways of playing k backgammon, and it is,very popular. Private theatricals are a very common form of amuse ment among both boys and girls, and, like most of their sports, are frequent ly shared by their elders. As the children are often taken to the thea tre, they readily imitate what they have seen there.—St. Nicholas. A New Railway Foe Sixnal. A curious railway danger or fog signal has been invented in Chiswick, England, which has been adopted by the Southwestern Bailway. It con sists of a large wheel placed at the side of the track near a station and containing around its circumference thirty-two barrels, each bolding two cartridges. A lover placed along the rail is depressed by the passing train, and it in turn pulls back and then re leases a hammer which explodes two cartridges. After the train has passed the hammer automatically returns into position to fire the next barrel. It is connected by eleotricity with the sig nals, and the man in the box can set or disconnect it by pressing a button. The disconnection is worked by a magnet, which draws down the ham mer and prevents firing. It is ex pected that the contrivance will shortly do away with the clumsy de tonators now in nse.
