The rumors that occasionally warn us of European sympathy with Spain do not nfleet the situ ation. It is an admitted fact, firm as international law, that the United States nas the right to de mand a settlement of the Cuban! question. Further than this, we have not even taken a position. The only powero that could reader material aid to Spain are Great Britain, Germany apd Russia. We know the mistress of ths seas is with us, and has been long anxious that we should cure an evil that might breed international trouble at any time. The Spanish papers assure us that when discussing the subject at dinner the young war-lord of Europe “put his sword on the table and declared that while he was Emperor of Germany the United States should never have Cuba.” Now, we court Cuba as little as Emperor William carves bis food with a dress sword, and so the remark, even if authentic, touches the question not at all. But if Cuba should prefer to take shelter under the Starry Flag would his Majesty of Germany say no? We trow not. Would Russia? Lake City, March 19.—The coroner’s inquest in the Baker tragedy was finished to-day. Dis trict Attorney Abial Lathrop, 80 licitor Johu S. All of these highly esteemed contemporaries of the United States need their men and suns in their home business. To them a war between us and Spain would be what the outbreak of a dozen Apacho bucks in the West is to us—a painful incident that must cure itself as soon as it has fur nished headlines to the news papers for a few days. Spanish organs of public opinion are whist ling to keep up the courage of their readers—they realize fully that they are near a cemetery. If Spain had any substantial “backers” wonld she announce in advance that she could not pay the April interest on her debt? Would she find herself utterly un able to buy a warship or two? Would she find it impossible to exterminate an enemy that she herself describes as a “few ragged and disorganized brigands?” Let us deal firmly and justly by Spain, but let do outburst of in dignation be excited against other nations by false reports that they would give aid and comfort to our enemy out of mere ill will to us There is uo evidence that any European nation or people cher ishes such feeling except Spain Germany, it is true, has legislated against our hogs and apples, but that has been to protect her own producers. If that argument proves hostility, * then we hate every one of them. This is a time to bring cool heads to the front and to bridle unruly tongues.
