It is interesting to note the com ments of some of the great dailies to the north and west of us on the disaster of the Maine and the dis turbing results that may follow in the relations between Spain and the United States. The Republic, St. Louis, says: “If Spanish treachery is respon sible for the frightful catastrophe, war is inevitable. If the fanata- cism of an individual is responsi ble, Spain should be forced to make full reparation for her care lessness in not guarding against such an expected outbreak.” The News, Ind. is very con servative and says “even the Jin goes, with few exceptions, to their credit' be it said, have shown a most commendable moderation." The Press, N. Y., says “there is one ground for a casus belli and that is, if it is proven that the ex plosion was designed—then an archy prevails in Cuba and in such event, it might be in the judg ment of the administration, neces sary for this country to assert the position generally assigned to it in treatises on international law and take possession of the port and harbor in the interest of human- That is the only leg of belliger eacy—and it is a sound enough member—that this country has to stand on.” The Times, Richmond, says, “it is only in case we can connect the Spanish government with the act that it could possibly be made a cause of disturbing the friendly re lations between the two countries, etc.” The Army and Mavy Register in this connection remarks, “it may be assumed as unquestion able that the Spanish officials had no connection with the explosion. They certainly could have no pos sible interest in such a diabolical outrage.” The News, Baltimore, remarks, “There will be plenty of time when the facts are better known, in the meantime only light heads will imagine that any harm is done to the national glory or the nation al power by keeping our heads cool." The Journal, N. Y„ and the Times Democrat, New Orleans, “hear the war horn cry” and in dulge in a great deal of fine war rhetoric. If we go to war, then let us go from a high sense of duty. We see no material benefit to the most of us—if to some of us—in a war wfth Spain, if we can afford to move on material and personal lines. We have no factories to grind out powder, none for the manufacture of arms and all materials of war, no millionaires to buy bonds and fatten upon the necessities of the country. In the event of war, in all prob ability complications will arise with other nations. The paths of commerce will be obstructed, and then-what is to become of our col- ton and tobacco exports, our cot ton mills of which we are so proud. The South is not a grain producing country, and if it can be so made, can we compete with the great granaries of the West ? We can see no material or moral benefit to the South in such war, but when our coasts are threatened then let us up and defend them. iheriff's Sale. land ly Ini Florence, hundred ed on the on the east on the K.O. We publish elsewhere the views of General Hampton on tb> ques tion of war with Spain a id the course the South should tv,..sue in such event. His views, we believe, represent the sober reflecting sense of the country. There is no jingo here, but instead the dignified speech of the statesman and warrior which, while recognizing our obligations to the wtiole country, still cannot forget the old State in whose ser vice in the field 4nd in high civil position he has spent very many df the best years of his life.
