Richmond was yesterday afternoon declared guilty of man slaughter. The jury did not re main out long and that was their verdict. As stated before Rich mond was indicted for murder and his plea was self-defense. The court then took up the State vs. Carl Morgan, assault and battery with intent to kill. The details of this case, a cut ting affray on the graded school grounds, are well known. Ollie Hatchell, the prosecutor, and Dr. McLeod, who dressed the wound, were the only witnesses exam iued yesterday and this morning the case wan resumed. It consumed the entire* morning hour, and the jury rendered a ver dict of guilty of assault aud bat tery of a high and aggravated na ture. The sentence of the court was a fine of $40.00 or imprison ment in . the county jail for 80 days. The fine was paid. As the diMM£ boar had arrived the court tow a* recess until Mon day morning. « This morning the court sen tenced Geo. Richmond, convicted of man slaughter, to three years imprisonment in the State peni tentiary. Below are two additional true bills: The State vs. Josh Fountain, taking and using a mare without intent to steal and without the consent of the owner. The State vs. John Matthews, burglary and larceny. Grand Jury’* Report. The grand jury having done a hard week’s work was discharged yesterday afternoon. Below is their final report : To Hon. I. D. Witherspoon, presiding judge, We the Grand Jury beg to sub mit our final report for year 1897. We have passed on all bills sub mitted to us by the Solicitor. We have inspected all county offices, Court House and Jail and find them in very good condition. We desire to mention especially the office of Clerk of Court which is remarkably well kept. An expert is now at work on the books of Auditor and Treasurer, and we have engaged him to ex amine the books of supervisor sometime this fall. Any irregularity in these offices will be reported by us to our suc cessors at the next term of court. As the offices of Clerk and Sheriff are examined by the Solicitor, we did not deem it necessary for us to enter into a thorough examination of these offices. We note with gratification an improvement in the way the jail is kept. The prisoners seem to be well cared for. A committee of three of our number visited the chain gang and they report them well fed, well clothed, in healthy condition and doing good work tor the county. We find that most of the magis trates do not present their hooks to the Grand Jury for examination, only three, R S. Smith W. W. Graham and B. Rrosser, having complied with the law in this re spect. We recommend that yoyr Hon or require them to appear at the next court and show cause why , they have not complied with the law in this particular. We rec- commend that the county super visor furnish a suitable cancelling stamp for offices of county treas urer and auditor to be used by them in annual settlements in the cancellation of vouchers. * We further recommend that racks for hitching horses be erected in rear of court house. Also that the small houses on south side of court house be re paired. We notice that several of the shade tre°s on court house yard are dead and recommend that others be planted in their places, W« present John Strother for house brsakmg and grand larceny and name as witneeses, Chas. Just as we go to press the funer al cortage of Mrs. Charles M. Covington is leaving the house. The service will be conducted at the Baptist church, and she will be laid away in Mt. Hope ceme tery where loved ones of the fami ly rest. Horse Stolen. From my stable early Monday morning a sorrel mare, with white spot in forehead, white hind legs, and knot on right bind leg.
