On Monday morning the nfferry voices and happy faces of school children will be heard and seen on our streets again. School begins on that day, and doubtless now many are bnay"looking up books and satchels which during the summer months have been packed securely away. • The repairs on the school build ing are about completed, and the cleaning and scouring process is going on. When the yard has been shorn of its summer’s growth of weeds both teachers and pupils will hav.e an attractive place awaiting their coming. Superintendent J. L. Mann has cordially invited all the friends and patrons of the school to be present on"the opening day, and has promised them some interest ing exercises. This morning both warehouses had good sales, and grading is now going on prepara tory to another sale to-morrow. To-day between 20,000 and 25,- 000 pounds of the golden weed passed into the hands of buyers, and the prices were up to the standard. The sales aa heretofore were, satisfactory to all concerned. Among those who had tobacco to sell to-day were Messrs. G. S. Driggers, F. W. Stackley, S. A. Gregg, R. E. Currin, E. M. An drews, Jno. Welch, J. J. Welch, A. M. Huggins, J. D. McCall, W. J, Turbeville, Thomas Ham, of Lamar, T. E. Gregg, L. F. Wal lace, W. R. Gregg, A. S. Gregg, T. C. Johnson, Hezekiah Johnson, A. J. Ham and H. H. Ham* Shipments of tobacco have been received from Camden and Carters- ville, and this is now being pre pared for sale. Large shipments have been made recently, and the officials at head quarters are kept quite busy fill ing the orders from the county dispensers. Tuesday and yester day were big shipment days. On the first day named $11,897.51 worth of liquors were shipped, and yesterday the sales amounted to #8,000. Coir Vance says that the orders from county dispen saries continue to come in, and that the original package agents cannot compete to materially hurt the business of the dispensaries because he says the liquors which are sold by the State are superior in grade. The state board of control is now in session, and purchases will be made to-day. It is stated ^hattheboardin- tends to reduoi^ of liquors for no other reason than to try to knock o"t the business of the original package establish ments. The statement is made that the board in-ends to reduce the price of liquor to a minimum with as small a profit as is consistent with the management of the business, and operate affairs on this basis for awhile, and if the sales of the original package agents increase to such an extent as will material ly interfere with the conduct of the business, then the board will recommend to the next legislature an elimination of the profit fea ture of the law. Open Air Concert. On Monday night the Florence Silver Cornet Band will give an open air concert on the vacant lot between Waters’ furniture store and the office of John Kuker, Esq. This aggregation of skillful mu sicians will render some of their choicest selections, and everybody is invited to stroll down and hear the music. . . * Horse Stolen.. From my stable early Monday morning a sorrel mare, with white spot in forehead, white hind legs, and knot on right hind leg. Any information concerning same will be gratefully received.
