Conductor Horne, of the A. C. Darling- Line, is in the city. Capt. Horne ; is one of the oldest conductors in the service. Comp-Gen. Norton spent yes terday in the city and left this morning for Darlington, where he will address the people to-day. Miss Jennie Covington, whose short stay in Florence gave great pleasure to many people, returned to her home in Waycross, Ga this morning. Hon. B. B. McWhite is spend ing the day in the city. The Cap tain brought in his son Mr. Wal ter McWhite who will take the evening train for Clemson. Mr. J. S. Hutchinson, who is operating the steam shovel for tbe A. C. Line at Rockv Mount, spent yesterday in the city. Mrs. Hutchinson is visiting relatives of Mr- Hutchinson at Newport, R. I. is Miller, of Columbia, his mother in the city. Capt- H- L. Odiorne spent Sun day with his family in the city. Miss Celia Milligan and Miss Cameron, of Charleston, are visit ing the family of Mr. S. H. Con fer. An unusual stir on the streets this morning indicated the advent of Labor Day with all its attendant festivities. A few mijnutes before io o’clock ths town clock struck three times, strains of music burst upon the air, and the parade, which proved to be a splendid ore, started. The line of march was taken up according to the program, the reel teams, the fire companies, and the floats de carnival coming in the order named. Tbe column was five squares in length. When the Florence Silver Cornet Band, which led it, had reached Lake’s Corner the second time, the end was at Chase's corn er and the middle was near the BapSaab «harch. Old Hope's en gine was handsomely decorated in green and white and the Hook and Ladder truck was transformed into a thing of beauty. The fire boys wore their beautiful uniforms and walked two abreast, while the Hook and Ladder boys took it more comfortably on their truck. In line also were the Hope Juniors and the “Young Americas” with their reels. Taking it all in all, Florence’s Fire Department made a splendid show. A number of wheelmen were in line, riding two abreast. Coming just behind the fire companies were the floats, repre senting our various business houses. Thirty ©r forty ot ^these tastefully arranged rolling adver tisements were in line and the ex hibition made was creditable to all concerned. A detailed description of each cannot be given. Some of them were gorgeous in their decorations; all were unique and striking and made up telling ad vertisements of the various lines of business. All along the line of the pa rade crowds of people were out to see the sight, and on the business streets a mass of humanity filled the sidewalks. This morning many visitors came in from the country and from our neighboring sister towns, and our own people helped td swell the crowd. Abont xi o’clock the parade reached its starting point, and then from the balcony of the Central Hotel Hon. J. M. Johnson of Ma rion, delivered an address upon the significance of Labor Day. He spoke entertainingly to one of the largest audiences ever addressed in Florence. Then came the reel races, whkh were as fellows: Hope reel team. Good run. Time 22 1-2 seconds. Hope Juniors made a good run hut were given no time. FOOT RACKS. Foot race, 100 yards dash open. The entries were Ed. Stackhouse, Robt. Laughlin, Jno. Brunson and Jno. McKenzie.
