FA IK Irby made a taking speech on Saturday night, but it won’t take him into the Senate. Irby ia a politician and he touches all the wires with a mas ter hand. For instance, on Sat urday night he fingered with a deftness approaching the unique. The fact that Irby declares him self indepeudent of Tillman should influence no man to vote for him. McLfturin, though he and Tillman may have the same tariff views, is just as independent as Irby, and his record in the National Legis lature, as contrasted with Irby’s, shows that he is by far the better man for the plrce. Therefore, vote for McLauriu. Take the three candidates for the United States Senate and hold them up before your mental vision, scrutinize them carefully, closely and with unprejudiced mind, and then make your decision. Having done this, which, we ask,shows up best through the prism of an un biased judgment and which would reflect the greatest credit upon South Carolina in the halls of Congress? Which? Local Kicking*. Hundreds of people visited the new freight yards yesterday after noon. Mr. A. A. Cohen celebrated his 47th bithday yesterday by enter taining & few friends. Mr. Cohen is the oldest merchant in the city of Florence, having been actively engaged in business for the past 26 years and has assisted in every enterprise to build up the city. KIGHT MAN CAUGHT. Paint! The Safe Robber at Chadbotira Run Down by Depot Agent Pittman, Who Makes a Paint 1! Paint!! 1 Neat Capture. On Wednesday night of last week the express and railroad office at Cbadburn was broken into and lobbed. >26.15 was taken from the safe, and a pistol, razor and a few minor articles from the office. Koute Agent K.C. Barrett, of this city, was informed of the robbery, and promptly sent Jailor Dennis Jfud the bloodhounds to the scene. On the arrival of the train. Geo. Workham, a negro who had been loafing around the place several days, as {he train was leaving, jumped on the mail coach. ' Mr. Barrett, learning of this, tele graphed to Conductor Sam Gar mon at Brinkley station, and de scribed the man, asking where he got off. The train was stopped at Brinkley where Conductor Gar mon made a search to see if he could locate his man. He saw him and so informed Agent Pitt man. The negro’s suspicious were aroused by the delay of the train, and he went to the baggage master to ask the cause of the delay. When he was told that the train would leave as soon as the Conductor was ready, he went to the rear end of the coach and jumped off, brandishing a pistol in his band. Capt. Carmon started the train, but as he did so Workham dashed towards the woods. He was followed by Agent Pittman with a gun. The negro soon distanced Mr. Pittman, how, ever, who returned to the office- disguised himself and went to Crouly on his bicycle. He found hie man on the W. C. & A. track going in the direction of Wil mington, and in order" to attract his attention made some remark to him and endeavored to sell the negro his bicycle. By this time Mr. Pittman was sufficiently near to draw his pistol and order the negro to surrender. Workham en deavored to escape, but slipped and fell, when Mr. Pittman seized and disarmed him. He was car ried to Whiteville, given a pre liminary hearing and in default of bail placed in jail. A razor, pistol «nd glass-cutter found in his possession, were identified by the Agent at Chadbouru. In talking the negro stated that Hays Webb an ex-couvict had confessed the robbery. The authorities are now after Webb. The authorities have undoubtedly caught the light man, and credit should be given to Mr. K C. Barrett for his prompt action.
