It is stated that he was not at all pop ular with his countrymen. grettsd to Learn of His Sudden Death. (Newsand Courier, Aug. itttb.) The news of the death of the Rev. D. X. La Far was received with real regret in the city yester day. Mr. La Far had gone to Brevard, N. C., for a portion of the summer and although not in robust health his death was unex- : peeted. j Mr. La Far was a Charleston ' minister of whom there was never an unkind word sa<d. He was a Presbyterian and a descendant of the Huguerots, and although it has been years since he has occu pied a pulpit regularly his volun teer services were often extended when desired. Mr. LaFar did noble service for his fellow man daring the war by remaining in the besieged city and ministering to the bodily and spir itual wants of those who were obliged to linger here, either as home guards or non-combatants. The life of this minister was of such peaceful and unassuming work that there is only to chroni cle in his death that he lived for his fellow men. Mr. La Far rear ed an interesting family in this, his home, and his old age was crowned with honor and the “well done’’ of all who knew him. Wliy You should Join the . . . Clemson College needs a presi dent, and we desire to add our voice to the general call for Dr. John M. McBryde. He is a man who will measure up to all the exact ing requirements of the position. Dumb men are not as interesting as good talkers. Merchants who do not advertise are not as inter esting to the public as those who do.—The National Advertiser.
