Last Night at the Mission. Last night the Catholic church was crowded with an appreciative audience, many being unable to obtain seats. Father O’Sullivan delivered an eloquent and impres sive sermon on ‘‘sin and its con sequences ” During the course of his remarks the Father showed the terrible havoc which sin works in the human soul. Viewing the matter from a Catholic standpoint he showed how having been cleansed.from sm in the waters of baptism there was a strict obliga tion upon all who were Catholics to keep unsullied their baptismal innocense. This morning Father O’Sullivan continued his instruc tion on the sacrament of penance. He defined what Catholics believe and to what they are obliged in this matter. He emphasized the fact that a real and true sorrow for sin is required before the priest can pronounce the words of abso lution. That confession without this sorrow is useless. He re marked that never in the 1900 years of the Catholic church’s his tory had any enemy of the church been able to state that a priest had ever violated the secrecy of the confessional, many preferring to suffer death rather than do so To-night’s services will be held at 8 o’clock sharp and not at 8.30- A number of questions have been placed in the box and will be an swered from the platform. The following questions were answered last night: Why do Catholics pay the priest to have their sins forgiven? Father Sullivan replied, “Catholics never did pay one cent for having their sins forgiven. If they did, the priest soon would have to start a bank. 1 have heard over 8,000 confessions in the last 3 years and you could figure out what the re sults would be if I received only 5 cents from each penitent. I d< n’t know that priests are cross looking men, Father Laycock ap pears n< t very dangerous and I will not certainly frighten anyone dur ing my stay in Florence. ” Why do Catholics abstain from meat on Fridays? Answer, “Be cause the church which is the liv ing voice of God teaches them to do so? ” There were other questions answered in an interesting and satisfactory manner. A Delicate Love Token. South American lovers have a pretty custom. It is well known that when the petals of the great laurel magnolia are touched, how ever lightly, the result is a brown spot, which develops in a few hours. The fact is taken advan tage of by the lover, who pulls a magnolia flower, and on one of its pure white petals writes a motto or message with a hard, sharp- pointed pencil. Then he sends the flower, the young lady puts it in a vase of water, and in three or four hours the message written on the leaf becomes visible. — Boston Transcript. the curbing m some way and he was violently thrown to the ground For a few moments he was stem- ned. The walls proved too much for him, however, and he had to content himself with smashing the buggy, the remains of which are now ly ing in the street. After doing this damage the horse very contented ly meandered over into Ives’ lot and was there captured. IMMENSE COTTON CHOP. Seill, the Statistical], Flgutes a Yield of Over 10,000,000 Bales, New Orleans, 15.—Mr. H. M. Neill, the well-known statisticau, has issued a circular on the grow ing crop. After referring to the correctness ot his estimate made in July, 1894, of the crop of the season, Mr. Neill says: “At this moment for this year, the promise is equal to any pre vious year in every State but Texas, and on the present acreage, even allowing that Texas should fall short of her maximum pro duction per acre by 1,000,000 bales, the outlook now is for a crop of at least 9,750.000 with 50,- 000 to 1,000,000 more within the range of possibilities. This figure of 9,750,000 is really very conserv ative, for a product per acre out side of Texas equal to 1894-95 would give 7,350,000 bales and a m iximum for Texas would be 3,- 650,000 bales from which, allow ing 1,000,000 off, you would have a crop of 10,300,000 bales. The crop is now so far advanced from recent rains and heat that it will reach maturity and be inde pendent of frost at an unusually early date. Should we soon have good rains in Texas her crop also would be near perfection and the possibilities for total 'crop would then be something enormous.” Belief Id Six Hour*.
