G. Mayfield stated that he would withdraw from the .Senatorial race if he could not prove McLauriu a populist. Yes terday at Yorkville he said that he had failed so to do, and, in ac cordance with his promise, he promptly withdrew. As to the contest now, the opinion is that the real race will be between Mc- Laurin and Evans. — • *- ♦ tlood Prices tor Tobacco. This morning an experienced to bacco man told a representative of the Daily Times that yesterday’s prices were higher than they have been since the opening of the to bacco market this season. He said furthermore that prices were higher here than he had everkuowu them in South Carolina. Good! This is but one link in the chain of evi dence which proves that Florenca is the place to sell tobacco. «++ Bicycle Track. Mr. H. Jaegar has let the con tract to Mr. 1. K. Watson for put ting the bicycle track in good con dition and Mr. Watson has already commenced work. The work is to be completed in time for the Labor Day races that Mr. Jaegar is ar ranging. Attention, Colored Farmers. TheColored Farmers Association of Florence county, will be held at Pleasant Grove Baptist church, Saturday, August 28th, 1897, at 10 o’clock a. m. All members are requested to bring with them their annual taxation, and all visitors are invited to assist in raising necessary moneys to defray ex penses of the association. The State Sunday School con vention will meet at Camden on August 24. An interesting and instructive prog<am has been ar ranged, and the proceedings will be of immense value to Sunday School workers. In another col umn will be found rates to Colum bia and Orangeburg. At either of those points tickets to Camden can be purchased. All persons desiring to attend the convention should notify Mr. J. E. Vaughan by Aug. 20. How to Help Horses Rndiire the Heat. (Our iluuib Animals.) The following appeared in sub stance in the various Boston dail ies of July 7th and 8th: Geo. T. Angell sends out the following suggestions for the com fort of the horses: “On a very hot day keep a sponge, a towel, or your haudkerenief soaked with jure cold water on the top of your lorse’s back if sc re, use pure cold water on it freely every time the saddle is removed. Id hot weath er tell the driver of your herdic, cab, or carriage to drive slowly, especially up hills, and give him five or ten cents extra for doing it. In hot weather be sure your check rein is loose and your horse fre quently watered. In hot weather a mouthful of grass, or a piece of bread, or a cracker even, will help your horse wonderfully.” sell Kggs at Home. Farmers should never ship eggs until they have first endeavored to get better prices for them near er home. Fresh eggs are always salable, for every fami of wheat, half that amount of oats and potatoes and a proportionate production of other cereals every year. The small orchards and 1 vineyards, of which every farm has more or less, yield about 630,000 bushels of fruits, and their pro ducts of cider, vinegar and mo lasses amount to 200,000 gallons ; yearlj. To this may be added 4,000,000 pounds of butter, 850,000 pounds cf cheese and 1,200,000 pounds of honey. The irrigated grass fields produce 463,000 tons of alfalfa, while the unirrigated valleys yield 125,000 tons of wild hay every year.
