Gregg, who expected to leave to-night for Virginia to join Mrs. Gregg cannot do so on ac count of sickness in the commun ity. Mr. J. F. Stackley is spending the day at Eutawville. Mr. Stack ley own* a farm at that place and we understand is preparing to run a branch business there. Mrs. J. W. McOown and child ren have returned from their visit in the country. Mr. McCown spent yesterday with them and they returned with him last night. Mr. R. A. Croxton of Lee’s Warehouse, the largest and best arranged warehouse at Danville, Va., is in the city to-day. Gibbous, who is giving exhibitions of cooking on the Vapor Stoves at the Lake build ing on Evans street, is attracting crowds of ladies and gentlemen daily. Messrs. Welling tfe Co. have accepted the agency for these stoves. Mr. J. H. Mahoney, of Packs- ville, brought the first bale of new cotton to this market to-day. It was bought by O’Donnell & Co., at 7-30 and was graded as middling. The bale weighed 512 and was a better grade of cotton than usual with the first bale.—Sumter Daily Item. Large shipments of apples are being made daily from the Mt. Airy section of North Carolina. The Southern Express Co., handle abont 80 or 90 crates a day and still the shipments increase. Miss Charlotte Osborne of Louis ville, Ky., who has been visiting the family of Rev. H. R. Moseley, left this morning for Carolina Beach, N. C. Mrs. Mary A. Benston and niece, Miss Ethel Williamson, of Nance- mond county, Va., are guests at the home of Mrs. Benston’s broth er, Mr. Jesse Ives. Mr. F. M. C., was in the city a short while this morning. Mr. Croswell is one of the most popular officials of the company and has hosts of friends everywhere. Mr. T. A. Clarke who has been at Manville, Sumter county, for the past few weeks curing tobacco for the farmers in that section, spent yesterday with hie family at Back Swamp. Mr. Clarke was in town this morning and came in and subscribed to the Daily Times He says that he will return to Florence in a few weeks. Local Pickings. A splendid program of bicycle races for Labor Day is in course of preparation. Mr. Geo. G. Thompson has moved his law office to 197 Evans street, one door west of post office. The committee on repairs for the Methodist church are meeting with good success in the way of contributions and we understand that work will soon be commenced. The snake was on the side of the track and was seen striking at the car wheels as the train passed. The train was stopped by the conductor and the male passengers got off and killed it. Father O’Sullivan, a Jesuit Missionary, is conducting a four days mission at the Catholic church commencing this evening at 8.30. He is assisted by Rev. Father E. M. Laycock, of St. Pat rick’s church, Charleston.
