Bertram & Willard’s great mili tary play “Captain Dick,” under the personal direction of the au thors, will be presented in the opera house Thursday, February 18th. The cast of characters is composed of Darlington talent and the authors, Bertram & Willard. J. D. Smithdeal, composer and ar ranger of the incidental and spe cialty music, is sole musical direc tor. The performance will be given for the benefit of the Dar lington Guards and the Florence Silver Cornet Band. The Guards will turn out in full dress uniform and headed by the band will give a grand parade. The band will play the following selections: “On Broadway,” overture, “Chrisan- themum Waltz,” (composed and published by Mr. Daylo in Chi cago for the mandolin and guitar and since his sojourn in our midst arranged by him for the band), Spanish Serenade “ Sapaloma,” “Imitation of Christmas Celebra tion,” and the mazurka, “Secret Love.” waters of the of Charleston hsrbor bristled with Uucle Sam’s fighting forts and gleamed with the restless arrows of dozens of search lights. From the beach channel on the north to Pumpkin Hill channel on the south the fleet held the line in the following order: Massachusetts, Maine, Am- phitnte, New York, Indiana and Columbia. The line was estab lished at 7 o’clock and the Vesu vius was sent out to sea. The search lights began at once to playover the waters. It was about 7:15 when a light from the Maine stopped in its wanderings and streamed long and steadily upon one spot. The cause was soon known. She had caught the Ve suvius. A red and green coston signal told the tale, and the lights of the fleet turned upon the spot brought the white hull of the cruiser into full view. The Ve suvius put up her light fore and aft and went to sea again for an other trial. The next time she got past the line and was nearly out of danger when the light of the Amphitrite caught her. Three other attempts were made aud each time the blockade runner was quickly caught. London, Feb. 15.—The Times to-morrow will publish a Madrid dispatch saying the papers there announce that the Duke of Tetuan, minister of foreign affairs, has re ceived from Souor Dupuy de Lome, the Spanish minister to the United States, a telegram stating that President Cleveland, Secretary of State jOluey aud all of the other principal public men of the United States regard the reforms for Cuba recently adopted by the Spanish government as ample. Minister de Lome, the dispatch says, added that the Cuban ques tion may be considered as dead, so far as the United States congress and public opinion are concerned. Pittsburg, Feb. 14.-—Fire this morning burned the building oo- chpied by the Pittsburg Post, causing a loss of $90,000. The printing presses, oue valued at $25,000 and the other at $10,000, were badly damaged. Ton type setting machines, valued at $30,- 000 were ruined. The Post’s loss will reach $70,000, covered by in surance. The building was owned by the J. M. McCullough estate and the loss on it will reach $20,- 000, covered by insurance. After seven hours’ labor the man was uncov ered, he being conscious all the while. It was found that his spine was broken, one of his legs crush ed and there were more injuries of an internal nature. He was con scious up to the time of his death. The body of Charles Larsck was found at 1 o’clock this morning. The body of A. L. Lathertou was found at 11 o’clock this morning. A few minutes later the remains of John Matthews were brought to the surface. The remains were in a terrible condition. Both of Latherton’s legs wer.‘ missing. GREEK TROOPS EMBARK FOR CRETE. The committee on arranging for the celebration ot the thirty-third anniversary of the order of Knights of Pythias lave ar ranged for the proper celebration of this memorable event in Pvth- ian circles by giving a supper at the Central Hotel on Friday night, February 18th. The supper will be for the mem bers of the order of Kuiglits of Pythias and their families. The tickets are now in the hands of the committee from whom only they can be obtained.
