The Occupations. “Pleasure and action make the hours seem short”— Frocbol knew this and he also knew that “Satan finds work for idle hands to do,” so that the •urest way to keep children out of mischief ia to give them work, and work so explained as to seem play, and such pleasant play at that! Aa I say, he knew that the ever futile imagination, the ever ready hand, the ever quick eye of the child needs to be turned in the right direction to prevent waits of energy and to form good habits for the future. To effect this snd, he devised his occupa tions, which he slowly and labori ously thought out and materialized by watching children in th dr idle moments. He saw that they liked to stick holes iu paper, so he devised his First Occupation viz: Perforating. He also noticed their liking for sewing and satis fies it fully in his Second Occupa tion, etc. In the Gifts, the child is given the concrete and advances to the abstract, here he gets the abstract first and lastly the concrete. In fact, in one we have analysis and in the other symthesis. As said above, the First Occu pation is perforating and, on it are conditioned the others, for it is the point. This occupation makes the child’s brain active, trains his eye sight, makes him accurate, and, above all, wide awake. The love of the beautiful and good is also increased here. All this may sound very far fetched and impossible to outsid ers, but it is true nevertheless and had I room here, 1 would explain more fully. “We love in others what we !a< k our selves, And would he everything hut what we are.” Yon know and 1 know that this is true and if you won’t admit it, just be the companion of a child for twenty-four hours and you will see this forcibly illustrated, viz, tbs instinctive desire to imi tate something higher. Nowhere is this love of imitation more no ticeable than in the way children have of sewing. “Just as mamma does.” As said, Frmbel, the all- wise Fra'bel, knew this and made Sewing his Second Occupation. Sewing and Perforating are com plementary. If any child is of an inventive turn of mind, the Second Occupation will disclose this. Sewing simply strengthensthe taste for order,symmetry,accuracy,neat ness, constructiveuess, and num ber taught by perforating. The Third Occupation is Draw ing. H is defined by Pestalozzias “The expression of thoughts by means of lines.” One quickly sees that drawing cultivates the child’s power of observation and his creative faculty. The Fourth Occupation is Col oring and Painting—this leads to the representation of surfaces. Of course, this cultivates the artistic taste and teaches the children how to design. The child’s taste for the beautiful has been developed iu the previous Occupation, it is further developed by this and enabled ky it t" produce the beau tiful. The Fifth Occupation is Inter lacing. It helps in all the occu pations of life and mak> a the fingers and hands graceful, it also helps and strengthens the intel lect. “The mental discipline af forded by this Occupation is ad mirable, the muscles of the hands are cultivated, the eye is trained to measure angles and distances, the taste is exercised in selecting harmonious colors.” Weaving is the Sixth Occupa tion and, in my mind, one of the moat fascinating. By thit, the child is taught to distinguish large from small, up from down, its mathematical education is en larged; if he is all ideals, he is compelled to come down to plaiq counting, if he is enwrapped in the things of this world, owing to home influence, his love for the beautiful is called into life by this delightful occupation. He is also taught here to distinguish colors. It is truly murvelous to see how many things are contained iu a little thing, hew gr^ut things in the email! It is a source of i,ever- ending joy to the pupils and teach er. In connection with this is Free Cutting and Silhouetting. The Ninth Occupation consists of work made by sticks and peas. Here we have the embodied case and edge. “This Occupation awakens, develops, and cultivates patience and perseverance. The chi!d thus trained enters school with a bright, active mind: his memory retains the picture of the forms to be studied and has a clear conception of the logical develop ment which produced the differ ent forms.” The Tenth Occupation is Card- Board Modeling, which prepares the way to clay-modeling. There is a review of edges and corners here. In the stick work, the child made the cube, but it was boll )W, and just outlined, here it is hollow, but with surfaces and iu the next Occupation it is solid, simply demonstrating that which we all learn in Geometry viz. two points determine the direction of a straight line, a line generates a surface, and a surface a solid. “All precious things discovered late,” you might well exclaim if you can, by my meagre explana tion, understand the wonders of Clay Modeling. Here the child gets the first lesson in symmetry. Modeling will help the embryo sculptor out, will awaken him to himself and toothers, will make him observant. We find that we must develop sur mental faculties to keep pace with the little ones. Ones having thoroughly grasped the meaning of the Occupations we could well exclaim, “All which is real ever remaineth and fadeth never!” and so will the grown per son cry who hio, as a child, en joyed the careful tutelage of a conscientious Kindergartner.
