Mr. Rainsford’s anti-trust bill has passed the house aud bsen or dered sent to the senate. Ihe bill is a good one and should become a law. It will be noticed that Mr. Bacnt’s bill “to piotect the child ren of the State from the baneful influence of false and partial and partisan instruction” does not condemn northern text books as such. The object of the bill is simply to insure impartial in struction, particularly upon “the reasons for and the causes and ef fects of” the war be* ween the States. Historical truth is sought after—the plain, unvarnished truth. That is all the South wants, and that is what the Daughters of the Confi'deraoy are attempting to secure through the legislature. SENATOR EAKLE. It is now Senator Earle. Yes terday the two houses of our legisla ture confirmed the choice of the people as expressed at the ballot box, and to-day the joint assembly formally declared Joseph H. Earle elected to succeed J. L. M Irby in the United States Senate. Seaator Earle, still Judge Earle, however, for he is now holding his last term of court in Florence, was nominated by the democrats of South Carolina in a hotly contest ed primary. He received the votes of Conservatives and Re formers, and he goes to the United States Senate, not as a Conserva tive, not as a Reformer, but as a democrat, pure and simple, and, beyond all that, as a South Carolinian to represent the State which he and all of us love. As a man he is clean and honest, fearless and strong ; as an official he has demonstrated his ability, and we predict with confidence that, after he has established him self in tbe Senate among the states men of the country, the people of our State can say, “We expected something and have not been dis appointed.” The next meeting of the Flor ence County Te&cher’i aMociation will be held at Evergreen academy on Saturday, Feb. 27th 1897 at 11 o’clock a. m.
