Christmas has come and gone, but the Times-Messengf.r would not object to receiving a dollar e^c h from many subscribers as a sort of New Year present. The first of January is a good time, a splendid time, in fact just the time, to si t tie such a matter, and the Timi.s- Messenok.r would be profoundly grateful. ANENT TAXES. The time for the payment of taxes, both state, and city expir< s on the first day of January, and after that date, according to law, the penalty will be imposed. As the legislature does not rruet until January 12, there can be no exten sion of time for the payment ui state taxes, but it is in the power of the city authorities to lighten the burden which just at this time is bearing heavily upon many of our ; people. That the burden isheavj no one can dispute. The holiday season has required the expend! ture of money, January 1st is the generally accepted time for settling accounts, and the times are hard. We hope council will give tie matter serious consideration. \\ e firmly believe that some measun of relief is needed, wc know it would be appreciated, and on tie whole we are convinced that council could do no wiser act than to extend the time for pay vli.
